Ducklings brings nursery and Reception children together, giving Peel Brow’s youngest learners a shared early years setting within the school on Fir Street, Ramsbottom. This mixed class organisation began in September 2025. The nursery’s character comes from books, conversation and children’s own interests, with outdoor exploration alongside classroom learning.
In the Ofsted inspection published in March 2026, early years reached Strong standard. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision. Staff developed children’s vocabulary through sustained conversations, checked their understanding and adapted practice to the children who needed it.
A book provides the starting point for each half term’s learning, linked to a question or statement that leaves room for exploration. Children help shape what happens next. Teachers take account of individual interests and needs, so the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines developing language, relationships and physical skills with early literacy, number work, creativity and discovering the world.
Hands-on investigation has a place indoors and outside. Interactive whiteboards and computers sit alongside dedicated outdoor learning areas, giving children different ways to explore ideas. A weekly Welly Walk adds a named outdoor activity; climbing, adventure and movement continue in different weather conditions. Wellies and a wetsuit stay at school for this purpose.
Books, songs and rhymes support language development. In March 2026, adults’ conversations with children helped them expand their vocabulary, form sentences and develop their thinking. Children also played together cooperatively and explained their ideas. The emphasis is on using language to participate, rather than simply listening to an adult.
Creative work includes exploring materials through activities chosen by children and tasks directed by adults. This gives children opportunities both to follow their own ideas and to try something introduced by the teaching team.
Settling depends on relationships with families and familiar routines. In March 2026, early years children settled quickly, with parent partnerships helping that process and daily routines supporting wellbeing and learning. Staff also provided extra practice matched to children’s needs.
Stay and Plays invite parents to work beside their child in the early years unit. Families can contribute experiences through a my world book and share a newly mastered skill using a wow star. These give home experiences a place in classroom learning.
Independence is practical: families are encouraged to help children manage coats and shoes, dressing, toileting and handwashing, as well as using cutlery. For concerns about development or additional needs, parents can arrange a conversation with the class teacher or SEND coordinator through the school office.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Bury Local Authority if they live in Bury, or through their home local authority otherwise. Nursery attendance is not one of the stated oversubscription criteria, which cover care status, siblings, medical grounds and distance.
Transition preparation is separate from allocation. Nursery families are invited to transition events, while summer classroom visits introduce children to their future teacher and classmates. A summer evening meeting also helps parents prepare for the next stage.
Contact the office at office.peelbrow@visionmat.com or on 01706 823204 for enquiries. Informal school visits can be arranged. Children bring a water bottle and bookbag each day, keeping everyday equipment alongside the outdoor clothing needed for exploration.
