Loose parts, recycled materials and real objects give Totts Nursery its character. The Curiosity Approach shapes the learning environment, with resources children can explore in different ways rather than tasks with a single prescribed result. Independence is one of the nursery’s aims.
Children can join from the beginning of the term after their third birthday. Totts is the nursery class within Tottington Primary School’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Its team includes a nursery manager and an early years practitioner, giving families a nursery-specific point of contact within the school.
Play combines children’s choices with activities guided by adults, indoors and outside. The EYFS statutory framework shapes the curriculum, alongside Development Matters. In practice, resources remain accessible for children to choose and explore, while open-ended activities leave room for different ideas and solutions.
Staff watch how children play, then use their interests to plan activities and introduce something new. Adults join conversations, demonstrate language and help children take their thinking further. Authentic objects, materials for reuse and loose parts give children something concrete to investigate. The emphasis is on exploring possibilities.
Outdoor learning is part of the session rather than confined to a break: nursery children can use their own play areas throughout the day. Art also combines play initiated by children with adult guidance, so creative work follows the same balance of choice and teaching.
Little Wandle Revised Letters & Sounds begins in nursery. At the June 2024 inspection, children in the Nursery Year listened closely to the sounds within rhymes and songs, while early years story sessions prompted enjoyment and conversations about authors and illustrators. That gives early reading a foundation in listening and talking about books.
A free fruit or vegetable snack is offered to nursery children at morning break each day. Families can also register for milk. Nursery lunchtime runs from 11.45am to 12.45pm, giving the day a defined pause around food.
For concerns about special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the first contact is the child’s class teacher, with the school’s SEND coordinator also accessible through the office. The school aims for children to learn alongside their peers. Its pastoral support has three levels, moving from class provision to targeted help within school or from external services, according to the child’s needs.
Attending Totts Nursery does not guarantee admission to Tottington Primary School. Families must make another application to Bury Council for Reception through the normal school admissions process. Treat that application as a separate step, even when your child is already settled at Totts.
The nursery’s work on independence, conversation and listening provides preparation for the next stage of learning. Those learning experiences are separate from the allocation of school places.
The 15 funded hours per week are available from the term after a child’s third birthday, arranged as five mornings or five afternoons. Additional sessions can be purchased. Children eligible for the 30-hour entitlement can take a place subject to a current eligibility code.
Morning sessions run from 8.45am to 11.45am; afternoons run from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. The 30-hour pattern is 8.45am to 2.45pm, while a full day ends at 3.15pm. These different collection times matter when arranging family routines. Contact the school for current charges for additional sessions, the half-hour top-up, dinners and snacks.
