Developed as a Georgian spa resort around John Carr's Crescent in the 1780s, Buxton stands as England's highest market town, perched in the Derbyshire Peak District at around 1,000 feet above sea level. Some 20,000 people live in the town today.
The central Buxton catchment and Taddington are the most school-competitive pockets in the area, drawing families seeking primary and secondary places in this upland corner of High Peak. Burbage and Palace Fields make up the western and southern residential spread, with Litton lying within the rural hinterland. Northern Rail services link Buxton to Manchester Piccadilly in around an hour.
