Free access to the Foundation Stage garden gives Lorraine’s nursery day an outdoor thread. Children explore indoors and outside, with their interests helping to shape what they do. For families looking for learning through discovery, that is the defining feature here.
The nursery admits children from age two and forms part of Lorraine Infant School on Highland Road, Camberley. By the inspection on 23 April 2025, separate teaching spaces had been resourced for children aged two to three and three to four. That gives the younger and older nursery groups distinct spaces within the school’s early years provision.
Children’s interests guide exploration, while the nursery aims to build language, thinking and independence through the activities they pursue. Adults support understanding as children learn, alongside their emotional development. The emphasis is on children making discoveries and developing the confidence to keep trying.
Within the Early Years Foundation Stage provision, children explore their interests indoors and outdoors, with opportunities aimed at developing language, thinking and independence. The Foundation Stage garden is freely accessible and equipped to support children’s development. Outdoor exploration therefore has a place alongside indoor learning. Elsewhere in the school grounds, the nature garden includes a pond, a meadow, sensory planting beds and areas for growing vegetables and flowers. These are concrete resources for exploring living things and changes in nature.
In April 2025, Ofsted identified nursery storytelling, singing and rhyme as foundations for early reading. Stories, songs and rhymes give children practice in listening, preparing them for early reading.
A nursery teacher works with qualified nursery assistants. The nursery team helps children settle into their new surroundings, giving families a starting point for the change from home to nursery. Staff also support emotional development alongside learning, so the nursery’s stated ambitions extend beyond what children can do independently.
Lorraine’s wider support structure includes an inclusion lead, an inclusion practitioner and a home school link worker. These roles bring inclusion and links with families into the school’s staffing structure.
Meals are prepared at school and served from a servery in the hall. This places food preparation on site, although families should distinguish that school arrangement from the nursery sessions they choose.
Attending Lorraine’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery entry and Reception entry are separate processes: families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions route by its deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and securing a school place as two decisions, even though the nursery belongs to the school.
The nursery operates during term time. Families can select sessions across the week, subject to availability, which gives some scope to fit attendance around family routines. Start and finish arrangements are designed to support the school day for parents with children in both the nursery and the main school.
Visits can be arranged by contacting the school. Meeting the nursery team gives families a practical introduction before joining. Central enquiries can be made on 01276 23207.
