Indoor and outdoor learning, with curiosity encouraged: that is the nursery’s stated starting point at Mytchett. Ducklings is the nursery class within Mytchett Primary & Nursery Academy on Hamesmoor Road. Children aged two, three and four can attend, although places for two-year-olds are limited. The nursery says children’s happiness and wellbeing guide its approach, alongside opportunities to try challenges and take risks.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) centres learning on play. At Mytchett, indoor and outdoor environments give children different spaces for that exploration; the nursery aims to encourage children to investigate rather than shy away from challenges.
Early reading has a place from the outset. In June 2025, children in the early years began learning about letters and sounds immediately, while nursery children followed familiar routines and readily contributed their ideas to staff. That combination gives the day both structure and opportunities for children to speak up.
Early handwriting. In June 2025, teaching did not consistently correct mistakes in letter formation. This is a useful point for families to discuss alongside the nursery’s early literacy work. Checks on understanding also needed attention in some foundation subjects across the school; that finding was broader than the nursery.
Support for additional needs follows an Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle. Parents and staff agree what help a child needs, then revisit its impact. A One Page Profile captures the child’s needs and preferences, while a SEND Support Arrangements Plan records targets and provision. These plans are formally discussed with families each term, giving parents a regular part in decisions.
Families can arrange conversations with the class teacher or SENCO, and regular SEND coffee mornings offer another route for advice. A home-school link book may be introduced for children needing more detailed communication. The academy’s main building has wheelchair access and an accessible toilet.
On full nursery days, children can have a school lunch for an additional charge. An annual contribution towards activities and extras is voluntary: families are not required to donate.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no attendance-based priority for entry in 2027/28. Families must make a fresh application through the local authority where they live. For September 2027 entry, the deadline is 15 January 2027. A sibling attending only the attached nursery does not qualify a child for sibling priority either.
Transition support is a separate matter. Early years staff liaise with nursery teams about children’s needs, with summer-term observations and parent meetings. Some children may have extra visits before starting Reception, and transition booklets can help those needing additional support become familiar with the change over the summer holidays.
Three attendance patterns shape the week. Session A combines Monday and Tuesday full days with Wednesday morning, ending at 11:25am. Session B begins at 12:15pm on Wednesday and includes full days on Thursday and Friday. Session C covers Monday to Friday. Arrival is between 8:45am and 9:00am; collection is between 2:55pm and 3:05pm. Confirm the chosen pattern when booking.
The nursery offers 15 funded hours from the term following a child’s third birthday, subject to a place being available. Limited places cover 30 funded hours for eligible families, with attendance across all five weekdays. A small number of 15-hour places serve two-year-olds from the term after their second birthday; FEET-funded children receive priority consideration. Paid places are also offered subject to the nursery’s conditions. Ask the school for current charges.
