Forest School, songs and programmable BeeBots give South Camberley’s nursery day several different directions. This is provision for three- and four-year-olds across two infant campuses, James Road and France Hill Drive, with 104 places between them. Families choose a morning or afternoon pattern, with a limited number of all-day places.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 10 and 11 May 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together early learning through exploration and teaching. Here, children have continuous provision within their year group, alongside a daily class session introducing number and shape. That gives the day both opportunities to explore and a shared mathematical focus. Music starts with experimenting with rhythm, singing and sounds, while early history learning explores children’s own past and ideas about time.
Technology has a practical place too. Early years children use iPads and programmable BeeBots, introducing digital tools and simple programming. Sharing and recognising feelings are also early years learning themes, connecting classroom learning with the everyday business of playing alongside others.
Forest School extends learning outdoors from early years onwards. Its natural environment gives children materials to investigate and opportunities to follow their interests. The approach is led by children’s interests, with adults observing and supporting their play. Outdoor exploration therefore sits alongside the indoor learning provision rather than being treated simply as a break.
Nursery experiences include Living Eggs, a Travelling Theatre Production and Little Street/ Imagination. These add encounters beyond ordinary classroom activities. Trips are reviewed, so the programme can change between years; voluntary family contributions help determine whether an experience can proceed.
In May 2022, consistent routines from early years onwards helped children work together and handle their emotions. Familiar expectations matter at this age, when learning to share space and cooperate is part of the day itself.
Food arrangements give full-time nursery families a choice between a charged school lunch and a packed lunch. Chartwells cooks meals on site. Medical diet requests require supporting confirmation from a GP or dietician, together with the request and evidence forms, so allergy arrangements involve preparation with the school. Children receive fruit, and milk is free for under-fives.
Additional needs support begins with classroom adaptations. Across the school, everyday provision includes visual cues, flexible groups and quiet spaces. Teachers discuss concerns with parents, try targeted strategies for between four and six weeks, and involve the SENCO if further support is needed. For children added to the SEND register, a Provision Map is shared with parents and reviewed each term. This gives families a defined part in planning support.
Parent communication includes emailed newsletters, consultations and annual progress reports. Staff also receive ongoing safeguarding training, with concerns passed to the safeguarding leads.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route, handled by Surrey County Council. Treat the nursery choice and the later school application as two decisions: accepting a nursery place does not remove the need to apply again for Reception by the normal deadline.
Morning nursery runs from 8.30am to 11.30am; afternoon nursery runs from noon to 3pm. The booking pattern is five mornings or five afternoons, each providing 15 hours per week. All-day nursery runs from 8.30am to 3pm, with limited places described as 30 hours per week. The fixed half-day patterns make the weekly commitment clear.
Children can start in September, January or April, in the term after their third birthday, subject to space. Nursery applications are managed by the school, with a registration form and an admissions enquiry email: admissions@southcamberley.surrey.sch.uk.
A school-logo book bag is required for nursery children, but nursery does not require PE kit. Contact the school for current lunch charges.
