Tuesday afternoons bring Forest School with Branch Out, while weekly assemblies give pre-school children a part in the wider school community. St Joseph's pre-school in South Woodham Ferrers combines a term-time day with the Early Excellence learning approach. Its Catholic character shapes shared activities, and applications are welcomed from families of any faith or none.
The pre-school day runs from 8:45am to 3:15pm. Children learn through interactive activities, with Early Excellence providing the named approach to learning. Weekly assemblies and themed early-years events connect their experiences with the wider school. Religious education uses To Know You More Clearly from pre-school onwards, so Catholic learning is part of the day rather than confined to special occasions.
Outdoor learning has a regular place. Branch Out leads Forest School on Tuesday afternoons, with children exploring and making things in different weather conditions. They wear their own clothes for these sessions. Beyond the school grounds, pre-school children took a train trip to Burnham-on-Crouch during 2024/25, giving a concrete example of learning further afield.
There is a curriculum caveat. At the inspection on 19 and 20 June 2024, Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good. In June 2024, spoken-language learning helped pre-school children prepare for their next stage, but mathematics and phonics preparation did not match the Reception programmes closely enough. Children consequently reached that stage less prepared than they could have been. That makes continuity in early learning a material consideration for families.
A pre-school manager works alongside teaching assistants, with assistant cover divided between Monday to Wednesday and Thursday to Friday. Support for special educational needs and disabilities starts with assessing children's skills when they enter pre-school. Parents contribute to decisions about support and are invited to termly reviews, giving families a recurring opportunity to discuss how provision fits their child.
Physical access is straightforward: the school's classrooms and learning spaces occupy the ground floor, with routes around the site that avoid steps. This matters for children with mobility needs. The school also has a sensory room used by pupils, although this is a school facility rather than a separately identified nursery room.
Meals are cooked at school by Dolce, with four choices each day, including vegetarian food. Packed lunches are also an option; nuts, sweets and chocolate are excluded. Breakfast Club includes breakfast, while After School Club provides a light snack such as yoghurt, fruit, toast or wraps. Food therefore forms part of the extended care routine as well as the school day.
Attending pre-school does not guarantee a Reception place. For the 2026/27 admission cycle, nursery attendance confers no priority: families must make a separate Reception application through Essex County Council, with applications reaching their home local authority by the National Closing Date. The governing body makes admission decisions, while the local authority coordinates the normal admission round.
Shared school activities provide familiarity, but they do not change that application requirement. Keep the two questions separate: how your child experiences the school community, and whether they receive a Reception offer.
Term-time provision runs from 8:45am to 3:15pm. Breakfast Club operates from 7:15am to 8:50am, and After School Club from 3:20pm to 6:00pm; both accept pre-school children. These separate clubs extend care around the pre-school day, so families should plan their arrangements around the individual start and finish times.
