Granted a Royal Charter by King John in 1196, Chelmsford grew from a River Can crossing into the county town of Essex, today a city of around 110,000 people across north-east Essex. Radio was born here. Guglielmo Marconi established radio broadcasting in Chelmsford in the early twentieth century, and St Mary the Virgin Cathedral, raised to that status in 1914, remains the historic centrepiece of a compact Victorian core.
Moulsham, immediately south of the centre, is among the most sought-after pockets for primary catchments, while Boreham to the north-east has long drawn families competing for primary and secondary places. Greater Anglia trains link Chelmsford station to London Liverpool Street in around 35 minutes, and Great Baddow, Chancellor Park, and Writtle extend the residential belt to the south and west.
