Nursery at Tangmere Primary Academy

Stories outdoors and conversations with adults give Tangmere’s nursery its clearest character: early learning built around exploration and language. This is the nursery attached to Tangmere Primary Academy on Bishops Road in Tangmere, Chichester. It forms part of the school’s early years provision.
The nursery team includes a manager, nursery nurses and a nursery assistant, with an EYFS leader overseeing early years. One nursery nurse also holds the Forest School Leader role, bringing an outdoor learning responsibility into the team.
Language develops through everyday exchanges. At the June 2025 inspection, children had frequent conversations with staff from Nursery onwards, giving them opportunities to extend their vocabulary and practise communicating. Songs, sound games and rhymes introduced the sounds used in early reading. Learning starts with listening and talking.
Indoor exploration sits alongside outdoor activity, including story sessions outside. This gives children different spaces in which to investigate and listen, rather than keeping learning within the classroom.
Within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), personal and social learning includes TTB Citizens and the 1 Decision programme. Its colour-drop characters appear in books and short videos, giving young children stories through which to explore relationships and wellbeing. These are concrete starting points for learning about themselves and other people.
Predictable routines support the early years day. In June 2025, staff helped children settle into those routines promptly and develop confidence through their care. For a young child, knowing what happens next is part of feeling secure enough to explore.
Across the school, staff have training in speech and language support, and an Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) is available within the support structure. SEND Support Plans identify strengths, development needs and strategies; progress is discussed with families in autumn and spring meetings and the year-end report.
Individual learning needs. The June 2025 inspection identified inconsistent adaptation of learning for some pupils with SEND across the school. This was a school-wide concern, rather than a nursery-specific finding. Families whose child needs additional support should discuss how activities will be adapted for them.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application through West Sussex County Council’s Pupil Admissions Office, using the normal application deadline. The online School Places route allows parents to express school preferences on a single application.
Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions. Becoming familiar with the school does not replace that application.
Term-time attendance runs for 38 weeks, with opening hours of 8:45am to 3:15pm, Monday to Friday. Families can select days and session times: All day runs from 8:45am to 2:45pm, morning from 8:45am to 11:45am, and afternoon from 11:45am to 2:45pm. Afternoon wraparound extends attendance from 2:45pm to 3:15pm. Each option has a separate charge; contact the school for current charges.
Funding can cover part or all of session costs and can be used across every session without restrictions. Early Years Funded Entitlement provides 15 weekly hours for all three- and four-year-olds, with the nursery applying on families’ behalf. Free Childcare For Working Parents provides 30 weekly hours for some children; parents obtain their eligibility code and share it with the nursery.
