Nursery at St Clare's Catholic Primary School

Play, small groups and children's own interests shape early learning at St Clare's. The nursery belongs to St Clare's Catholic Primary School on Cloes Lane in Clacton-on-Sea, bringing its youngest learners into a school with an explicitly Catholic ethos.
The school aims to give children a sense of belonging and help them develop socially, spiritually and academically. Its values include compassion, inclusion and respect. For families, that religious character is part of the educational choice, alongside the practical question of how nursery attendance fits their child.
Early learning combines activities directed by adults with opportunities children choose themselves. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) covers learning, care and development before school age; here, continuous play and small-group work are used across its seven learning areas. Children have opportunities to pursue an interest as well as join something an adult has planned.
Cornerstones Curriculum provides the topic structure, with children's individual interests also influencing the learning. Classroom and outdoor areas are arranged to encourage children to select resources, explore and act independently. That gives choice a practical place in the day, rather than making every activity an adult's decision.
Language also receives attention throughout early-years learning, with opportunities to introduce vocabulary as children take part in activities. Computing has a nursery-specific element: small-group tasks are planned through collaboration between the nursery manager, early-years lead and computing lead, alongside school leadership. Digital media and online safety are part of the broader EYFS work, giving technology a place within early learning.
Before children start, early-years staff talk with parents and previous settings to understand the child. Those conversations provide a starting point for sharing individual needs and experiences. Subsequent observations inform planning and children's next steps, while Tapestry allows observations to be shared with parents.
Support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities includes individual targets within one plans. Physical access matters too: the school has wheelchair-accessible areas and an accessible toilet. These are concrete features for families considering mobility needs.
The Coolmilk scheme provides registered under-fives with free milk. A chilled 189ml carton of semi-skimmed milk is delivered to the classroom each day. Registration is required, so this is a practical arrangement parents can put in place.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families apply separately through Essex County Council's Common Application Form, which allows up to four school preferences in ranked order.
For the 2026-2027 admissions cycle, children attending St Clare's Nursery receive priority within the oversubscription criteria when a tiebreak arises. This is a conditional advantage, not an automatic offer. Families still need to complete the separate Reception application through the normal route by the applicable deadline.
Nursery enquiries can go to the school office by telephone on 01255 425344 or by email at office@st-clares.essex.sch.uk. The school also accepts messages through a contact form. Its address is Cloes Lane, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex CO16 8AG.
For the milk scheme, parents can register through Cool Milk or obtain a form from school. Registering by Tuesday enables milk to begin the following week, making the timing useful when preparing for a child's start.
