Nursery at Middlethorpe Primary Academy

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Three-hour sessions set the rhythm for Middlethorpe’s youngest children. Two-year-olds attend mornings or afternoons, during term time, while older nursery children can also attend a full day. That distinction matters for families planning childcare around work.

The nursery belongs to Middlethorpe Primary Academy on Highthorpe Crescent in Cleethorpes. Children normally begin in the term following their second or third birthday and stay until the academic year in which they turn four ends. The nursery aims to build confidence in talking, independence and curiosity, with relationships between children, families and staff given clear emphasis.

The Nursery Day

Learning combines adult teaching with activities organised for children to keep exploring and practising. This follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the framework used here to develop children’s understanding, knowledge and skills. For parents, the practical distinction is that a session includes teaching as well as opportunities to use what children are learning.

Jigsaw starts in the nursery year and brings emotional understanding and social skills into learning. Its themes include relationships, differences and keeping healthy: useful foundations for children beginning to spend time in a group beyond their family.

Books have a place in every school classroom. Across the school, working walls give children visual models and learning prompts; these are concrete features of the wider learning environment rather than a separate nursery programme.

In March 2025, staff working in early years used children’s interests to develop their understanding effectively. A planetarium experience accompanied early-years learning about space, making an abstract topic more tangible. These findings concern the early-years provision as a whole.

Care and Support

Settling begins before the start date. Families can tour the nursery and meet its team, an optional home visit follows the completed application, and children are invited to a settling session. Those steps give children and parents opportunities to begin getting familiar with the people involved.

For additional needs, parents can discuss concerns with their child’s teacher or arrange contact with the SEND coordinator through the office. Support follows an Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle, with parents involved and progress reviewed termly. This creates regular opportunities to revisit what is helping.

Teaching adjustments. In March 2025, a school-wide improvement action concerned inconsistent adaptation of teaching for some pupils with SEND. Families considering nursery support should distinguish that concern from the positive early-years findings.

School lunch arrangements include meals cooked on site or a packed lunch, with nuts and foods containing nuts prohibited. Nursery families should not assume that the free-meal arrangements for older children apply to them.

Moving On to Reception

A nursery place does not guarantee admission to Reception. Parents must make a separate application through North East Lincolnshire’s local authority admissions process. The Trust’s conditional position is that a nursery child receiving Early Years or Pupil Premium funding could secure a Reception place; this is not an unconditional promise to nursery families.

Transition support is separate from allocation. Nursery staff coordinate with Reception colleagues and pass relevant records to another school when appropriate, helping the receiving team understand the child.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am; afternoons run from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. For two-year-olds, these operate Monday to Friday during term time, with no full-day option. Older children’s full-day hours are 8:45am to 3:15pm.

For three- and four-year-olds, the 15-hour pattern means five mornings or five afternoons. Some families meeting the eligibility criteria can receive 30 funded hours. Additional hours can also be paid for privately; contact the school for current charges.

Arrange a nursery tour or request an application through the office on 01472 698185. General enquiries can also go to office@middlethorpeprimary.co.uk.
