Nursery at Hazel Leys Academy

Rhymes, songs and stories shaped nursery learning at Hazel Leys Academy during the inspection on 3 and 4 October 2023: children practised listening in preparation for phonics. This is the academy’s own nursery provision, within a primary school on Gainsborough Road in Corby. There is one nursery class, alongside one class in each subsequent year group. For parents, that places the nursery within a school structure rather than a separate childcare setting.
Government funding is available from the term after a child’s third birthday. Nursery enquiries go directly to the academy office, while the later application for Reception follows a separate council route. Those are two distinct decisions for families.
Listening has a clear purpose here. At the inspection on 3 and 4 October 2023, nursery teaching used stories, singing and rhymes to develop children’s attention and prepare them for later phonics learning. These listening activities helped prepare children for phonics in Reception.
Number learning starts in the early years too. In October 2023, children were developing foundational number knowledge. Together, these strands give parents a concrete picture of the learning priorities: attention to spoken language and an introduction to number, rather than simply keeping children occupied.
At the October 2023 inspection, vocabulary was deliberately selected across the school, beginning in nursery. Learning words supported children in expressing their ideas and explaining their learning; this also supported confidence among children learning English as an additional language. The nursery’s language work therefore extended beyond listening to stories: the words children learned mattered too.
In October 2023, early-years children settled promptly and became familiar with everyday routines. That matters for a child starting group education: learning how the day works is part of the start, alongside language and number.
The academy’s SEND provision includes individual support and group sessions, with personalised targets for children on its SEN register. Speech and language therapy, Autism Outreach and the Educational Psychology Service are among the named support services. Parents with concerns can speak to their child’s teacher or arrange a meeting with the SENDCo, giving families a direct route into discussions about learning needs.
Additional support. School-wide findings in October 2023 identified insufficiently precise help for some children with SEND and some at risk of falling behind. Monitoring in some subjects also lacked the precision needed to guide teaching support. Families should keep the match between their child’s needs, support and progress central to those discussions.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the North Northamptonshire Council School Admissions Team, online, in the year before admission. Treat the nursery place and the Reception application as separate arrangements.
