Family support and nursery learning share a home at Pen Green. The nursery school serves children aged two to five in Corby, within an integrated centre where a team from several professional disciplines supports children and their families. That gives the provision a broader family focus alongside its educational role.
The centre occupies a former comprehensive school dating from the 1930s. Its work extends beyond nursery education to home visits, health support and adult learning, giving parents several ways to engage with the centre themselves.
Language runs through the learning. In March 2023, Ofsted found that teaching combined carefully chosen vocabulary, repeated in conversation, with enthusiastic storytelling and nursery rhymes. Children acted out The Three Billy-Goats Gruff, exploring position and size through the story and toy goats. Words have a practical purpose here.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the requirements for early learning and development, sits alongside activities adapted to individual children. Mathematics appears in ordinary play and routines: children arranged numbered cans from 1 to 10, recognised quantities of play dough shapes, and counted in both directions while waiting for lunch. These examples show how early mathematical ideas can become part of familiar actions rather than isolated exercises.
Indoor learning and outdoor activity both feature. Some children practised tasks aimed at body control and strength; others gained confidence on bikes outdoors. Adults adjusted activities to children's development, so physical learning had a specific purpose for each child. In March 2023, classrooms were settled, children understood routines, and adults demonstrated considerate behaviour themselves. Predictable expectations helped children concentrate on their activities.
Settling begins with the family. After an application, staff discuss individual requirements and organise settling for both child and parent. Relationships start before attendance, giving the team an opportunity to understand a child's needs before nursery becomes part of their routine.
Support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) is woven into learning. In March 2023, children with SEND participated in the same ambitious learning programme as their peers, with sensitive adult help and changes to activities when engagement faltered. The practical implication is participation supported by adjustments to the activity.
Safeguarding was effective at the March 2023 inspection. Staff received regular training, passed concerns on quickly and worked with other agencies when children needed additional help. Families also received support: parents knew where to seek assistance, and vulnerable children and their families were helped to access it.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Treat the nursery choice and the later school application as separate decisions.
Funded nursery places are available for two- and three-year-olds. Applications use an online form, followed by a discussion of the family's individual requirements and arrangements for settling.
Nursery enquiries go to the admissions officer. For general contact, telephone 01536 400068 or email enquiries@pengreen.org. The centre is on Pen Green Lane, Corby, NN17 1BJ.
