Plasticine models and a balance beam built by children give Pattison’s early years a practical, hands-on character. Learning involves making, moving and working together. The nursery forms one section of the independent school on Binley Road in Coventry, alongside its prep and senior sections.
The ISI inspection of 3 to 5 March 2026 found that early-years learning responded to children’s interests and supported their social development. These findings cover the early-years setting, rather than providing a separate nursery grade. They give parents a picture of learning shaped around children and their developing independence.
Play carries the learning. In March 2026, early-years activities built the foundations of literacy and mathematics while giving children opportunities to explain their ideas. In plain parent language, this means early learning joins talking, thinking and doing: adults encourage children to communicate their thoughts rather than simply complete a task.
Physical development has concrete expression. Children used plasticine for model-making and constructed a beam to balance on. These activities exercised both small hand movements and larger movements involving balance and coordination. Making something and then using it gives children a practical reason to experiment.
Learning together also matters. Children developed kindness towards their peers and practised resolving disagreements respectfully. The early-years setting combined this social learning with activities beyond the school: a visit to a local building society introduced the work of cashiers. That example connects learning to people and jobs children can encounter in their community.
Assessment supports the next steps. Adults used what they knew about children’s progress to identify those needing additional help. For a parent, the useful distinction is that play was accompanied by attention to each child’s learning, with support directed towards keeping children alongside their peers.
A nursery manager and nursery practitioners make up the early-years team. Listed qualifications include childcare and early-years education, and one practitioner also has dance-teaching and deputy safeguarding responsibilities. This gives families identifiable nursery roles within the wider school structure.
In March 2026, safeguarding arrangements operated effectively in early years. Children received supervision during meals and breaks, and access to the setting was controlled securely. Appropriate staffing ratios were maintained. Care therefore extended across ordinary parts of the day, including eating and play, rather than being confined to learning activities.
The school’s admissions approach includes working with families to support the transition into school life. This is a school-wide approach; it should not be confused with a particular nursery settling timetable.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Treat Reception as a separate application: apply again through the normal admissions route by the relevant deadline. Choosing the nursery should rest on the experience it offers now, with the later admissions decision considered separately.
