At a Glance

A Creation Station, a book corner and daily outdoor play give Flying Start Nursery its character: children learn through making, stories and movement. Children can join from age 2. This is Copthorne Preparatory School’s own nursery, with Butterflies for the youngest children and Bumblebees as the pre-school class. Two Nursery classes formed part of the school’s early years provision in January 2026.

The ISI inspection of 20 to 22 January 2026 found that early years children had a carefully organised introduction to school, supported by capable, caring staff. For parents, the useful detail is how that introduction works: time together with a practitioner comes before a morning spent independently with other children.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the learning framework. In parent terms, activities connect language, physical skills and social development with discoveries about the world. Children choose activities themselves as well as joining shared stories and group tasks, giving them practice in making decisions and listening to others.

Butterflies’ Creation Station gives children materials for sticking and making; a separate messy area supports experiments with colour, texture and early marks. Bumblebees has a book corner. Stories also lead into practical learning: Sharing a Shell prompted discussion about characters, spiral-shell cutting and matching jewels to numbered shells. One story becomes opportunities to talk, count and control scissors.

Play has plenty of physical substance. In March 2026, Butterflies scooped and poured materials in a tuff tray, making tracks with trucks and mud. During December 2025, Bumblebees made figures with lolly sticks and used coloured pegs in loose parts play. These are small movements with a purpose: building hand control while children create something of their own.

Outside play takes place daily, with unstructured play continuing in different weather conditions. Weekly swimming develops confidence in the water through practising entry, floating and putting faces beneath the surface. Beyond the school grounds, Bumblebees visited Bocketts Farm in March 2026, handling small animals and taking a tractor ride. That brought their farm learning into direct contact with animals.

Care and Support

Settling begins with a parent and child spending time with a Nursery Practitioner, who learns about the child while they explore together. A further session allows the child to stay for a morning of activities and lunch. Applicants are also encouraged to try Little Caterpillars Toddler Group, giving families an earlier opportunity to meet staff.

In January 2026, early years staff used quiet prompts, gestures and a reassuring manner to help children remain engaged and settled. Progress observations informed each child’s next learning steps, with a check at age two and communication with parents. Children’s feelings receive practical attention too: Butterflies used The Colour Monster to explore emotions through paint and colour mixing.

Meals and rest receive close adult supervision, including when the youngest Nursery children sleep. Early years staffing includes sufficient practitioners with paediatric first aid training. The Nursery safeguarding lead works with colleagues on their safeguarding knowledge. The January 2026 inspection also identified some errors in the school-wide recruitment-check record; these were corrected during the visit, with accuracy remaining a recommended action.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Treat Reception as a separate application and complete the normal process by the applicable deadline.

Familiarity is a different matter. Nursery and Reception children regularly join together for problem-solving activities, working both individually and with others. This gives nursery children experience of learning alongside the next class, but it should not be treated as an admissions advantage.

Practical Information

Term-time-only and 48-week nursery arrangements are offered. For 2026–27, fees include early wraparound care from 7.30am and Nursery after-school care until 3.30pm; care beyond that point carries an additional charge, with tea an option. Contact the school for current charges.

Enquiries and private-tour bookings go through the admissions team at admissions@copthorneprep.co.uk or 01342 859954. Once a Nursery place is accepted, the team arranges a start date for the chosen days.
