At a Glance

England in the morning, Scotland in the afternoon: Langley Green Primary’s nursery has two named classes, with play, stories and daily number activities shaping its provision. It forms part of the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) in Crawley. Large outdoor learning spaces are shared across the EYFS classes, giving the nursery a physical connection with the wider early years setting.

The distinction for parents is practical. These are morning and afternoon sessions, each with its own class identity, so the nursery timetable needs to fit around the family’s day.

The Nursery Day

Play sits alongside activities directed by adults. The learning environment is planned around children’s next steps, while staff use daily observations across the EYFS areas to shape subsequent activities. That links what children do next to what adults have seen them learning.

The EYFS framework covers more than early reading and counting. Language, movement and emotional and social development sit alongside literacy, mathematics, creativity and learning about the world. Development Matters guides the knowledge and skills children work on. Outdoors, the large interactive learning areas extend the space available for these experiences.

Number work has two named daily elements: 5 and 15 Minute Maths and Winning with Numbers. The former connects mathematical ideas with everyday life, including patterns, measurement and time; the latter provides a sequenced approach to number knowledge. Staff also explore number learning while children work independently, so it is not confined to an adult-led activity.

Stories have a place through Talk4Writing core texts. Nursery families practise the class text map at home, providing a specific link between classroom learning and family time. A nursery theme pairs Splish, Splash, Splosh! with Come on Daisy!, giving the learning a named story focus.

At the inspection on 31 October and 1 November 2023, Ofsted found nursery children eagerly joining songs and rhymes that introduced sounds and numbers. This is a concrete example of early learning through participation.

Care and Support

Food includes a daily offer of fruit or vegetables for nursery children through the National Schools Fruit and Vegetable Scheme. Children also receive free milk each day until their fifth birthday; the school registers them, and parents can opt out. These are straightforward care routines within the session.

For children with additional needs, the school says its EYFS provision uses extra support or resources as needed. A deputy head also holds the SENDCo role and can be contacted through office@lgprimary.org.uk, giving families a clear point of contact for discussing support.

Parent consultations provide appointments with the class teacher to discuss progress. Each lasts 10 minutes, and children may attend with their parent. Safeguarding concerns can be raised with the school’s designated safeguarding leaders at DSL@lgprimary.org.uk.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. West Sussex County Council’s Pupil Admissions Office handles school admissions, while the school office handles nursery applications. Treat these as separate steps when planning ahead.

For new school starters, the induction programme includes at least two visits during the preceding summer term to meet staff and become familiar with classrooms. Parents also have an induction meeting covering routines and questions. That preparation supports familiarity; it does not secure admission.

Practical Information

England Class runs from 8:30am to 11:30am, and Scotland Class from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Nursery applications and enquiries go through the school office on 01293 525675. Families can arrange a school visit through the office or attend a dedicated open morning.

School uniform is expected, but a logo is optional. Royal blue tops, white shirts or polo shirts and black or grey bottoms form the main choices. Second-hand uniform can be bought through the office, giving families another option when preparing for nursery.
