A nursery classroom with outdoor space shared by the youngest school children gives Northgate’s provision its school-based character. The nursery is part of Northgate Primary School on Green Lane in Crawley, rather than a separate setting. Its classroom sits within a school whose grounds include a sensory garden, an allotment and a Forest School area.
Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the inspection on 11 and 12 January 2022. That judgement covered the school’s early years provision; it was not a separate nursery inspection. The practical distinction is that families are choosing a nursery within a primary school, with Reception admissions remaining a separate decision.
Choosing activities, joining games, tackling problems and interacting with adults were central to the early years curriculum’s purpose in January 2022. The approach was intended to broaden children’s experiences. For parents, the emphasis was on learning through participation and conversation, alongside developing the ability to make choices.
Number learning also had a clear place. In January 2022, the mathematics curriculum included early years and was designed to strengthen children’s grasp of numbers. These experiences sat within a curriculum that extended from Nursery through the school, giving the nursery a place in a longer sequence of learning.
The physical setting includes a nursery classroom and a hard-surfaced outdoor play area shared with Reception children. Beyond that area, the wider school grounds contain ponds and allotments, while indoor school facilities include a cookery room and libraries. These are school facilities, so the shared early years play area is the clearest nursery-specific outdoor feature.
Curriculum implementation. In January 2022, nursery and Reception staff needed more training in putting the new early years approach into practice. Opportunities to advance children’s learning were being missed. This qualified the Good judgement: the curriculum’s intentions and adults’ delivery of it were distinct issues.
Support sits within the school’s inclusion structure. Alongside the SENCO and inclusion team, Pupil Support Assistants work on speech and language and autism support. Named interventions include Attention Autism, narrative therapy, Precision Teaching and Lego therapy. These are school-level support arrangements, rather than a promise that each nursery child receives a particular intervention.
Families can raise special educational needs concerns through the school office on 01293 526737 or email senco@northgate.w-sussex.sch.uk. That provides a direct starting point for discussing an individual child’s needs with the inclusion team.
Attending Northgate Nursery does not guarantee a place in Northgate Primary School’s Reception. Families must make a separate application through West Sussex, which allocates Reception places. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as two separate steps.
For September 2026 entry, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past. Before starting school, children and parents are invited to summer-term introductory visits, with opportunities for children to meet their teacher and try activities. These visits help children become familiar with school. Families still need to make a separate Reception application.
The nursery has its own telephone number, 01293 582301. General enquiries can also go to office@northgate.w-sussex.sch.uk. The school address is Green Lane, Northgate, Crawley, RH10 8DX, giving families a direct contact route for the provision.
