Books and conversation give Vale View's nursery its clearest character. In April 2022, even the two-year-olds enjoyed browsing books and hearing stories, while staff focused on helping children develop their speech and vocabulary. For a child beginning to express themselves, that makes communication a practical part of learning.
The nursery belongs to Vale View Community School in Dover and includes provision for two-year-olds. Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at its inspection on 26 and 27 April 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Play shapes the school's early years curriculum, with opportunities indoors and outside. Children have time to explore activities independently, alongside teaching led by adults. The practical balance matters: children can try something for themselves, then receive help that extends their language or thinking.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the framework for this learning. Planning follows Development Matters and covers seven areas of development, beginning with the three prime areas before extending into the four specific areas. The school aims to adapt learning to children's interests and developmental needs, rather than treating every child as starting in the same place.
Storytelling, songs and conversation are central to that approach. Adults demonstrate language and add to what children say, making ordinary exchanges opportunities to develop vocabulary. April 2022 findings also described early years children exploring numbers and discussing them. These are concrete foundations: hearing and using words, handling ideas about number, and learning through activity.
Understanding the youngest children is an evidenced strength. In April 2022, nursery staff had detailed knowledge of two-year-olds' emotional needs and development. Alongside the attention to speech and language, this gives parents a useful picture of the support behind the activities.
The school's inclusion team includes a special educational needs and disabilities coordinator, a social, emotional and mental health champion, and a Thrive practitioner. Additional provision is reviewed, teachers receive support with strategies, and outside specialists can be involved when needed. Parents are included in discussions about support and next steps. These are school support arrangements, rather than a separate nursery service.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the relevant deadline. Choosing the nursery and securing a school place are separate decisions.
For transition, the school works with parents and local nurseries to help children move into its early years classroom. Familiarity and admission should still be considered separately. April 2022 findings also raised a concern about continuity beyond early years: when children moved into key stage 1, teaching sometimes did not build sufficiently on their early years knowledge and skills.
