At a Glance

Two Forest School areas give St Joseph’s Pre-School a concrete outdoor focus within its Catholic primary school setting in Droitwich. All classes use these spaces during the school year, placing outdoor learning alongside classroom provision.

The school’s overall Ofsted judgement is Requires Improvement. This is a whole-school judgement, rather than a separate nursery grade.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guides planning for children’s learning. Under the Creative Curriculum, books, rhymes and poems give children starting points for learning. Sessions combine activities for the whole class, tasks supported by adults and time for children to choose what to explore. Here, its guiding principles emphasise children’s individual development, relationships with adults and teaching that responds to their interests. For parents, that means an approach intended to take account of different starting points and rates of development.

Outdoor provision includes the two Forest Schools on site. These give children a setting for learning beyond the classroom throughout the school year.

For Pre-School children using after-school care, the day continues in the Bungalow behind the school car park. Indoor and outdoor play are both part of these sessions. Children can choose toys, make things through arts and crafts, play board games or take part in cooking activities. This is a different part of the day, with opportunities to play alongside children from other year groups.

Care and Support

Teachers and teaching assistants deliver SEND support, with the special educational needs co-ordinator organising additional provision. Depending on a child’s needs, teaching assistants provide individual sessions or work with small groups. This gives families a route from classroom support to more personalised help.

Parents can arrange a conversation with staff about their concerns. The school will try to provide an interpreter or British Sign Language signer when requested, helping families take part in those discussions.

Physical access includes ramps and a disabled parking space. There are two accessible toilets near the main reception area, plus a room with changing facilities. These are practical features for families whose children need help with mobility or personal care.

After-school care includes snacks with fresh vegetables and fruit, and children have access to drinks. Food is therefore part of the extended session as well as play.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Pre-School does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through their home local authority’s normal school admissions process and meet its normal deadline. St Joseph’s must be named on the application; supplementary information also goes directly to the school where applicable.

For children with SEND moving between classes, staff hold handover meetings to share their needs with the next teaching team. Families can meet the new teacher and teaching assistant before the school year starts, and transition days introduce children to their next classroom. These arrangements support familiarity; they do not secure admission.

Practical Information

After-school wraparound care accepts Pre-School children. Sessions start at 3pm and finish at either 4.30pm or 6pm; on Fridays, only the 4.30pm finish is available. Families using this provision need to plan collection around that shorter Friday session.

Contact the school office on 01905 773572 or email jod_office@emmausmac.com for enquiries. Visits can be arranged through the office. Refer to the school for current charges.
