Sound charts give Ardley Hill Academy’s nursery a concrete early learning focus: in July 2024, many nursery children recognised letter sounds and could locate them on a chart. It is a useful glimpse of children beginning to connect spoken sounds with written letters.
This is the nursery within Ardley Hill Academy on Lowther Road in Dunstable. At the July 2024 inspection, the nursery provision included two-year-olds and three-year-olds. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 16 and 17 July 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery inspection.
The Early Years Foundation Stage concerns children's early learning as well as their care. Here, recognising letter sounds and connecting them with letters on sound charts provides a concrete example of that learning. In July 2024, children’s use of sound charts demonstrated that many could recognise individual letter sounds. For parents, the distinction matters: this is a specific starting skill, rather than a claim that nursery children are already fluent readers.
The attendance pattern also differed by age at that time. Two-year-olds had morning attendance totalling 15 hours, while three-year-olds could attend programmes of either 15 or 30 hours each week. Those alternatives meant different amounts of time in nursery, depending on the child’s age and programme.
Each child in the Early Years Foundation Stage is to have an allocated key person. This gives the care structure an individual point of responsibility. A PreSchool Manager sits within the extended leadership team, and there is a separate PreSchool SENDCo role for special educational needs and disabilities. Families can contact the SEND team through send@ardleyhill.org.uk or 01582 667955.
Support follows an assess, plan, do and review cycle. The school aims to agree support with parents, check progress termly and hold three parent meetings a year for children receiving SEN Support. That gives families a recurring opportunity to discuss whether targets and support need changing.
Physical access has practical detail too. In January 2024, the school site was described as single-level, with sloping access to external classrooms and wheelchair access through the main entrance. These arrangements matter for families whose children need accessible routes around the site.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority, meeting the normal application deadline.
For the 2025/26 admission cycle, attending nursery gave no Reception priority. Children whose EHC plan named the school were admitted first; the remaining priorities concerned care status, eligible staff children, siblings still attending and proximity to school. Nursery attendance was not a criterion. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
The school office can be reached on 01582 667955, and the address is Lowther Road, Dunstable, LU6 3NZ. This provides a direct contact for nursery enquiries.
Attendance pattern. In July 2024, the nursery’s arrangements were a 15-hour morning programme for two-year-olds and 15-hour or 30-hour weekly programmes for three-year-olds. These are dated arrangements, so they should not be treated as a current booking offer.
