Nursery at Edlesborough Primary Academy

Stories, songs and independent choices give Edlesborough’s pre-school its character. It is the nursery provision within Edlesborough Primary Academy on High Street, with space for a maximum of 24 children in each session. That is a session capacity, rather than a total nursery roll.
For 2026-2027, children normally start in September or January in the term following their third birthday, subject to places. Entry in the term before that birthday is discretionary and depends on vacancies. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following its inspection on 19 and 20 September 2023.
Morning and afternoon sessions divide the day at noon. The school favours three full days, totalling 18 hours a week, to give children a regular pattern and continuity. Its Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum brings together physical, emotional, language and thinking development: learning here is broader than early reading alone.
Primary Knowledge Curriculum materials support the Understanding the World element of EYFS, using play, investigations and stories to introduce knowledge and vocabulary. The school aims to help children ask questions about their surroundings and develop a sense of where they belong. Permission for supervised walks and play extends to the academy’s grounds, connecting the pre-school with the wider school site. Photographs can record children’s experiences in Floor books and displays, with parental consent.
In September 2023, communication and language were a strength of early years, and nursery children enjoyed stories, rhymes and singing. Children also made choices independently and approached learning positively. There was a significant qualification: the nursery’s intended knowledge, vocabulary and skills needed clearer definition across all seven learning areas, including for two-year-olds attending at that time. This left some concepts less secure for subsequent learning. The Good judgement should be read alongside that curriculum concern.
Settling begins with introductory visits, when parents can discuss difficulties before their child starts. Normal entry at the beginning of a term is intended to support that process. Toilet training is not a condition of taking up an allocated place; families whose children need help are encouraged to agree a training plan with the pre-school team. This keeps personal care separate from eligibility for a place.
At snack time, children are offered water or milk. Parents supply information about food allergies, dietary needs and medical conditions, alongside permissions for emergency care and help with cleaning and changing. Authorised additional collectors must be over 16, so collection arrangements need planning as well as the session timetable.
SEND support connects families with the school’s Special Educational Needs and Disability Coordinator (SENDCo). Parents can request a meeting through the office, and individual targets may be agreed and reviewed with families and teaching staff. The school has ramps, double doors and accessible toilets, practical features for families considering access needs. Staff receive safeguarding training annually, and the pre-school has its own designated safeguarding lead.
Pre-school attendance neither guarantees a Reception place nor gives admission priority. Families must make a separate Reception application through the local authority’s normal process. For entry in 2027-2028, applications are coordinated by Buckinghamshire Council and must reach the local authority by midnight on 15 January 2027. Keep that application separate from nursery booking.
Support for a child’s next step is a different matter from admission. For children with SEND, information about their needs is shared with their next teachers during the summer term, and parents can discuss transition with the SENDCo. That supports continuity of care and learning; it does not change allocation of places.
Sessions run from 9am to noon and noon to 3pm, with morning and afternoon choices across Monday to Friday. An early session runs from 8.30am to 9am. Afternoon wraparound runs from 3pm to 3.30pm, except on Fridays. Both wraparound sessions carry an additional charge. Ask the school for current charges when considering your booking.
The preferred pattern is three full days, but requested sessions depend on demand. Children receiving Nursery Education Funding are prioritised for allocation of their full entitlement before younger children are offered places. Regular attendance is required to retain a place; after three weeks of non-attendance, the school reserves the right to release it.

No. It gives neither a guaranteed place nor admission priority. A separate application is required; the deadline for 2027-2028 entry is midnight on 15 January 2027.
No child with an allocated place is refused because they are not toilet trained. Parents are encouraged to work with the pre-school team on a training plan.
