At a Glance

Three session patterns give families a clear starting point: mornings, afternoons or a full day for children eligible for 30 hours. Houghton Regis Primary School's nursery takes children from three until school entry and forms part of the school's early years provision. Its admissions policy caps attendance at 48 children per session and the nursery roll at 68. These are limits, rather than a count of children currently attending.

The educational picture needs careful consideration. Ofsted's inspection on 15 and 16 July 2025 graded early years provision Requires improvement. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

A morning or afternoon place gives children a three-hour session; the full-day pattern includes lunchtime. Reading begins in early years, with checks on children's reading knowledge used to identify who needs extra help. In July 2025, children showed curiosity and enjoyed sharing their work with adults. Singing for parents and carers was one example of their confidence in showing what they could do.

Curriculum ambition. The July 2025 findings also identified an early years curriculum that was too limited, with the learning space and activities reflecting that weakness. Children were gaining too narrow a spread of knowledge and skills. Inspectors found that this limited breadth left children less well prepared for later learning than they should have been. The required improvement was a more stimulating curriculum, with learning ordered carefully and children's curiosity put to better use. For parents, the breadth of everyday activities deserves as much attention as the timetable.

Care and Support

Lunch is part of the practical planning for a 30-hour place. Families can choose a nursery lunch or send a packed lunch; school lunches carry a charge, so contact the school for current charges. The application form also collects medical information and dietary requirements, giving families a route to explain care needs before their child starts.

For special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the nursery policy provides for an action plan where needed so children can participate in activities. The school's support process brings parents, the class teacher and SENDCo into planning and reviewing help. Its SEND Information Report names visual timetables, task boards and ear defenders among classroom adaptations. These offer concrete starting points for discussing support for an individual child. Across the school site, classroom entrances accommodate wheelchairs, which also matters for families considering physical access.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through Central Bedfordshire Council's online school admissions route. For entry in September 2027, the deadline is 15 January 2027.

The council's admission arrangements for 2026/27 give no priority for nursery attendance. That position belongs to that admissions year. Familiarity with the school is separate from entitlement to a place.

Transition support includes a summer session where parents and carers meet Reception teachers and the SENDCo, alongside information sharing and classroom taster sessions. These help families and staff prepare for the change; they do not alter the admissions process.

Practical Information

Morning places run from 08:45 to 11:45, afternoons from 12:15 to 15:15, and the 30-hour pattern from 08:45 to 15:15, Monday to Friday. The nursery policy limits 30-hour places to 37 each academic year, so the longer pattern has its own allocation limit.

Funding starts in the term after a child's third birthday. Nursery applications use the school's form, downloadable or obtainable from the office. For enquiries, call 01582 867487 or email office@houghtonregisprimary.co.uk.
