Early reading, learning to care for yourself and discovering what adults do for work give The Vale Academy’s early years provision its character. This is the school’s own nursery provision on Wilbury Drive in Dunstable, with places for two-year-olds. It sits within a primary school rather than operating as a separate nursery.
Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the inspection on 3 and 4 June 2025. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Reading starts early here. In June 2025, children began phonics when they joined early years, introducing them to the sounds used in reading. Parents were also encouraged to share books with their children and given practical guidance. That connects learning at school with something families can do together at home.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum brings together early literacy, communication and the everyday skills children need to become more independent. The school aims for children to recognise their own name and learn to write it, while music and performance are included in its ambitions for communication. Reading is one part of a broader picture.
Playing with others matters too. The school aims for children to work through disagreements during play, develop empathy and care for their surroundings. These goals connect learning with ordinary social situations: expressing a need, considering another child and finding a way to continue playing together.
Little city workshops introduce children in early years to careers. They give the idea of work a concrete starting point alongside those literacy and social ambitions.
A Director of EYFS, nursery practitioners and an EYFS SENDco form part of the nursery team. The SENDco role provides a specific early years focus for special educational needs and disabilities, giving families a relevant role to approach when discussing their child’s needs.
Self-care also features in the school’s curriculum ambitions. Children are encouraged towards independence in looking after themselves, alongside understanding how to be healthy and safe. For parents, these aims place everyday care skills alongside learning to read and communicate, rather than treating them as separate concerns.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through their local authority and meet the normal application deadline. Choosing the nursery therefore needs to work for the nursery experience itself.
The school directs Reception applications through the local authority. Its September 2026 application routes were Central Bedfordshire for residents there and Luton for Luton residents. That was a past entry cycle; nursery enrolment and the Reception application remain separate decisions.
Nursery application forms can be downloaded or collected from the school office. For enquiries, contact 01582 211150 or vale@thevaleacademy.co.uk.
Appointments can be arranged to meet a senior staff member and explore the learning environment. This gives families a direct opportunity to discuss choosing the nursery with the school. Email enquiries are received by the school office and directed to the appropriate colleague.
