Time to choose, explore and play gives Thornhill’s nursery its character. Extended stretches of learning led by children sit within its early years approach, rather than a day described only through adult-directed lessons. The preschool accepts three-year-olds and is based at Grove Road in Houghton Regis, within Thornhill Primary School. Its intake depends on the balance between children and adults.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the January 2025 inspection. This is an early years judgement within the school inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.
Play shapes the learning. Thornhill follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with an approach that gives children time to explore resources and pursue their own interests. Learning combines practical exploration with developing an interest in books, supported by classroom reading areas designed to encourage enjoyment of reading. For parents, the practical distinction is that children have extended opportunities to make choices about their learning. The school’s curriculum also emphasises learning through practical experience in early years, in a redesigned learning environment.
Books have a physical place in that environment: early years classrooms contain dedicated reading areas. These give children somewhere to engage with books alongside their other exploration. Outdoor learning is also part of the school’s curriculum approach, together with visits and visiting contributors. These are school-level features, rather than a promise of a particular nursery outing or daily timetable.
Families can follow the early years curriculum through ClassDojo updates and speak with class teachers about learning. That creates a connection between classroom activity and conversations at home.
Additional needs can be recognised early. In January 2025, children’s needs were identified promptly from early years onwards, allowing support to begin quickly. A separate school-wide concern concerned teaching in some subjects: adaptations did not consistently match pupils’ needs, limiting what they learned. That finding should be kept distinct from the Good early years judgement.
Thornhill’s SEND arrangements use Assess, Plan, Do, Review: staff identify needs, agree support, put it into practice and check its effect. Parents participate in discussions about individual targets, which are reviewed each term. Early years children have a support-services team; the school’s external contacts include speech and language therapists and the Early Years SEND team. Referrals involve parental agreement.
ClassDojo provides class information, learning photographs and messaging between families and teachers. Staff are not expected to check ClassDojo outside working hours; allow time for a reply. For food, the school meal-ordering route is orders.citrus.online; current meal charges should be checked with the school.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal school admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Thornhill directs school-place applications to Central Bedfordshire Council Admissions.
Transition support and admission are separate matters. For children with SEND, preparation can include a meeting with parents, an individual transition programme and a picture story introducing the next classroom and its adults. This helps make a change more familiar; it does not secure admission.
