Cooperative play, growing independence and practical learning give Norwood’s pre-school its character. Part of Norwood Primary & Pre-School on Chamberlayne Road in Eastleigh, it has a pre-school teacher within the school’s teaching team. The emphasis is on learning how to learn alongside other children.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at its September 2024 inspection. That judgement covers the early years across the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery. The early years curriculum was carefully planned, with adults developing children’s language and helping them become more independent.
At the September 2024 inspection, children participated readily in both activities they could choose and activities organised by adults. This gave the day two complementary elements: opportunities to explore through play, and more directed opportunities to learn with staff.
At that inspection, classrooms and outdoor areas provided places to put learning into practice. The early years environment supported hands-on learning, so children could use what they had learned rather than only listen to explanations. Indoor and outdoor learning both formed part of that experience.
Learning to play together was another part of the day described in September 2024. Adults taught cooperation alongside the school’s routines and rules, helping children understand how to join shared activities. Communication, language and independence received attention during these experiences. For parents, that means the early learning described here includes everyday skills as well as participation in adult-organised tasks.
The pre-school has a teacher, and the school’s leadership structure includes a special educational needs coordinator. This places the nursery within a wider school team, with a role responsible for special educational needs.
SEND support. In September 2024, the school needed to strengthen how staff recognised and met some pupils’ additional needs. This was a school-wide concern, rather than a nursery-specific finding. Families considering support for a child with complex needs should weigh that distinction alongside the positive early years findings.
Attending Norwood’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application through Hampshire County Council; the nursery waiting-list process does not replace that application.
For the September 2026 Reception intake, applications from Hampshire residents ran from 1 November 2025 to 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past. The council’s admissions service is the route for the school application, and paper applications can also be requested through the school office.
Funding covers 15 hours each week from the term following a child’s third birthday. An additional 15 hours depends on meeting the eligibility criteria. Families using that additional entitlement need a valid code before the month preceding a new term ends, and must reconfirm eligibility every three months. Keeping the code valid is part of planning the childcare arrangement.
A pre-school visit can be arranged by telephone or email, giving families an opportunity to meet the team. To join the waiting list, complete a registration-of-interest form and send it to the school office or return it by email. Contact the team at info@norwoodprimary.com or on 02380 322 582.

At the September 2024 inspection, children took part in both freely chosen and adult-organised activities. Classrooms and outdoor areas supported practical learning, while staff developed cooperation, independence and communication.
