Outdoor discovery and learning to talk about feelings give Claremont’s early years provision its character. Pre-Nursery and Nursery cater for ages 2 to 4 at Fan Court in Esher, alongside the school’s younger junior children. This is nursery within an independent school, with early years forming part of the junior school rather than a separate setting.
The grounds offer space for learning beyond a classroom. That matters here because outdoor education is part of the early years curriculum, giving children opportunities to develop language and explore scientific ideas through their surroundings.
Discovery has a practical purpose. The ISI inspection of 10 to 12 December 2024 found that outdoor learning helped early years children develop communication and investigate the natural world. Activities were organised to sustain children’s interest, and their relationships with adults helped them feel confident enough to learn. Exploration and emotional development work together.
Music, languages and drama also enrich the curriculum in the early years and junior school. For a young child, this broadens the ways they can participate: learning involves expression and interaction as well as investigating their surroundings. Personal, emotional and social development receive attention alongside knowledge and skills.
Co-operation is another part of the day. Structured activities help early years children understand friendship and respect for others, giving them practice in learning alongside peers. These are useful foundations for taking part in a group and approaching the next stage of education with confidence.
Feelings have a concrete starting point: colour monsters help early years children express how they feel. In December 2024, warm adult relationships supported children’s trust and confidence. Junior pupils also helped younger children develop relationships, extending their contact beyond their own age group.
Parents have daily opportunities to talk with staff at collection and drop-off, with an online system providing another channel for updates. The conversation centres on each child’s wellbeing and learning, so communication is woven into the ordinary day rather than confined to formal meetings.
Before a September start, children are invited to an afternoon in the summer term to become familiar with the setting. A short stay-and-play admissions visit comes earlier in the process. The two serve different purposes: one forms part of entry, while the later afternoon supports settling before attendance begins.
Children already attending Claremont’s nursery move automatically into its Reception. This school-specific arrangement gives continuity for existing nursery families; the application process for children joining Reception from elsewhere is separate.
For external Reception entry in September 2027, applications go directly to the school, with a deadline of Monday 2 November 2026. Children joining that intake are invited to a Reception preparation session and a summer settling afternoon, helping them become familiar with their classroom and teacher before starting.
Nursery enquiries can go to admissions@claremont.surrey.sch.uk or 01372 473761. Families can book a nursery workshop with practical play activities and a school tour, or arrange an individual tour. This gives parents and children a way to explore the classrooms and outdoor grounds together.
Fan Court can also be contacted on 01372 463695. Junior school visitors use Claremont Drive, Esher, KT10 9LY. For current charges, contact Business Services on 01372 473602; keep financial arrangements separate from the automatic progression arrangement when planning your child’s time here.
