Nursery at Bengeworth CE Academy

Pouring drinks, preparing food and washing up are part of learning at Bengeworth's nursery. Its children's kitchen gives everyday independence a physical home, with children taking a practical role in caring for themselves and others.
Children can start after their third birthday, during the term in which they turn three. The nursery opened in September 2023 with 60 places and forms part of the academy's early years provision. Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 28 and 29 November 2023. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Child-led play and daily Family Groups give the day two distinct strands. Children have uninterrupted time to pursue their interests; adults join their play when there is an opportunity to introduce an idea or demonstrate a skill. In Family Groups, a nursery team member brings children together for planned learning, skill practice or help with something they find difficult. Play and focused teaching both have a place.
The curriculum draws on The Curiosity Approach, Montessori and Reggio Emilia. These influences sit alongside the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS): learning encompasses movement, relationships and communication as well as early reading, maths, creativity and understanding the world. The nursery aims to develop children who explore, think and communicate with confidence.
Loose parts and authentic resources give children materials to investigate. Staff adjust the learning environment to reflect seasons and children's development, following Development Matters. Practical tasks make the approach tangible: children prepare food in the children's kitchen, pour drinks, lay the table and help with washing up. These are opportunities to practise doing things for themselves and contributing to a shared task.
Every child belongs to a Family Group led by a nursery team member, providing a regular group connection within the day. Staff also record spontaneous learning moments on SeeSaw, so parents can share in discoveries made during play. In autumn 2025, nursery parents' evening appointments were led by children's Key Workers, giving families an opportunity to discuss their child with that member of staff.
Morning and afternoon sessions include a drink and snack. Food preparation also has a learning role through the children's kitchen. For safeguarding, the school has an Early Years Designated Safeguarding Lead, providing a specific safeguarding role for this age group.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and does not confer priority under the school's admission criteria. Families must make a separate Reception application through Worcestershire County Council School Admissions. Being settled in the nursery and obtaining a school place are separate matters.
For September 2026 Reception entry, applications closed on 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past. Oversubscription priorities include looked-after and previously looked-after children, siblings attending at admission, catchment residents and children of permanently employed teachers, followed by other applicants. Nursery attendance is not one of those priorities.
The morning session runs from 8:30am to 11:30am; the afternoon runs from 11:30am to 2:30pm. Children can attend both, from 8:30am to 2:30pm. A minimum booking of three sessions is required.
Breakfast Club runs from 7:45am to 8:30am, while Night Owls covers 3:30pm to 6pm. Self-funded additional sessions run from 11:30am to 12:30pm and from 2:30pm to 3:30pm. Rolling start and finish arrangements are intended to help families coordinate nursery collection with siblings at the academy.
Parents may wait until the term after their child's third birthday to access funding, if eligible. Contact the school for current charges. Nursery enquiries can go through the academy office on 01386442047 or office@bengeworthacademy.org.
