Building an obstacle course, then changing it together: this is the clearest picture of early learning at Bill Quay. During the March 2022 inspection, children in early years tackled problems collaboratively and enjoyed constructing and adjusting these courses. The activity brings movement and shared thinking together.
The nursery forms part of Bill Quay Primary School on Davidson Road in Gateshead. Its curriculum sits within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the national framework covering young children’s learning, development and care.
Play has a serious purpose within the EYFS. Children explore ideas through activities they initiate themselves, alongside learning guided by adults. For parents, that means looking beyond a finished picture or construction to the conversation, decisions and persistence involved in making it. The obstacle-course example captures that combination: children solve a practical problem together rather than simply follow instructions.
The framework gives greatest initial weight to communication, physical development and children’s emotional and social growth. These foundations support learning about numbers, books, the wider world and creative expression. Its physical-development guidance connects outdoor and indoor play with balance, coordination and strength; handling small tools and making things develops finer control. These are national expectations, rather than a description of particular nursery equipment.
Commando Joe’s adds a named approach to Bill Quay’s early-years curriculum. Its RESPECT framework uses challenges and missions to develop character and teamwork, with a programme extending from Early Years through the school. The emphasis is on trying unfamiliar activities and working with others, giving children opportunities to practise independence as well as cooperation.
Relationships matter alongside activities. Under the EYFS, the key person helps a child build an attachment and develops an understanding of their individual needs. That relationship connects emotional security with learning: an adult who knows a child can tailor modelling and support to them.
Bill Quay’s school-wide SEND arrangements use an assess, plan, do and review cycle. Parents contribute concerns and take part in decisions about support. Teaching can be adapted through clearer instructions, different resources or alternative approaches, while teaching assistants support individual children and groups.
The 2025 SEND Information Report specifies reviews with families at least once each term. It also describes communication aids, visual resources and involvement from specialists such as speech and language therapists. This gives families a structured way to discuss targets and adjust provision as needs change.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Choosing the nursery and applying for school are separate decisions.
For children with SEND, the school’s transition support may include social stories and familiarisation visits when moving between year groups. These help children understand a changed routine; they are support practices, not an admissions advantage.
