At a Glance

Songs, repeating patterns and a birthday party for a class teddy give Corpus Christi’s nursery its character: learning starts with experiences young children can talk about and explore. This is the nursery within Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School in Bensham, Gateshead, with a Catholic identity that reaches into classroom activities. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 15 and 16 November 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school.

The Nursery Day

Language has a clear place in the early years foundation stage (EYFS) here. In November 2023, staff supported children’s speech and vocabulary through opportunities that included recalling songs and rhymes. Learning was adapted to children’s starting points, with challenges that helped them build confidence. For a parent, the emphasis is on what a child can understand, express and attempt next.

Indoor and outdoor spaces both contribute to learning. In November 2023, the early years areas had distinct purposes and equipment that helped children extend their understanding. A low distraction area within the Early Years unit also gives children a space with fewer competing demands.

Nursery maths includes sorting collections, comparing amounts and exploring patterns. Children have also worked with shape, space and measure, and played a dice game involving rolling and colouring. These are concrete ways to explore mathematical ideas through handling, looking and taking turns. Other nursery learning has included hot and cold places, alongside conversations about important events in children’s own lives.

Catholic learning is similarly tangible. During an Advent topic, children celebrated a teddy’s birthday with games and singing, made an Advent wreath and suggested kind actions for a class calendar. Nativity figures and a picture matching game supported retelling the Christmas story. Familiar experiences give children a starting point for discussing faith.

Care and Support

Settling rests partly on predictable routines. In November 2023, early years children settled quickly as staff established expectations and identified their needs promptly. The practical value is a clear structure alongside attention to each child’s starting point.

Support for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) includes baseline assessment and NELI language screening in early years. Across the school, teachers and the SEND coordinator plan support with parents, with reviews at least once each term. Families can raise concerns through the office or contact their child’s teacher by telephone or Class Dojo. This gives parents a direct route into discussions about support.

School lunches are prepared on site. The menu rotates over three weeks, with sandwiches, a salad bar and a hot option, plus vegetarian choices. Catering accommodates intolerances and allergies. These are school meal arrangements; discuss your child’s dietary needs with the school before they start.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority’s Common Application Form and meet the closing date for the relevant admissions round.

For the September 2026 intake, nursery attendance carried no additional priority, and the application deadline was 15 January 2026. Those dates belong to a past admissions cycle. The distinction matters: familiarity with school routines is part of a child’s learning experience, while allocation of a Reception place follows a separate admissions process.

Practical Information

The school’s Early Years timetable runs from 08:40 to 15:10. Treat this as the Early Years timetable rather than a nursery session booking model. School term dates differ from Gateshead Council’s, so families should use the school calendar when planning childcare.

For nursery enquiries, telephone the office on 0191 477 2175 or email info@ccpg.bwcet.com. Families can also arrange a school visit. Ask the school for current charges.
