At a Glance

Forest School gives Robertswood’s nursery an outdoor thread: children can explore nature in two dedicated areas, one beside the main playground and another on the school field. This is the school’s own nursery in Chalfont St Peter, with learning that includes both early reading and the everyday business of sharing equipment and managing feelings.

Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 1 and 2 November 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Learning stretches across indoor and outdoor spaces. In November 2022, early years children were developing curiosity and persistence through purposeful activities and supportive relationships. Adults helped them take turns, manage emotions and become familiar with school routines. These are practical foundations for joining in with other children and staying with an activity when it becomes difficult.

Early reading begins with recognising that letters represent sounds. The school’s phonics programme is Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, while its English curriculum includes speaking and listening alongside preparation for reading. For a nursery child, the emphasis is on those beginnings rather than school-age reading outcomes.

Forest School adds hands-on exploration. Its provision includes Nursery, and the two outdoor areas give nature-based learning a physical home beyond the classroom. Planned activities across the Forest School provision include investigating wildlife and habitats, making structures and learning to use tools. The emphasis on communication and teamwork connects outdoor exploration with learning to cooperate.

Curriculum progression. The November 2022 inspection identified early years activities that did not consistently extend children’s existing understanding. Some children consequently struggled to retain new learning. Greater precision in planning, sequencing activities and checking understanding was required. For families, the important distinction is between an engaging activity and one that helps a child remember and develop what they have learned.

Care and Support

Emotional support forms part of the learning day: in November 2022, adults were teaching children how to handle feelings and share equipment. Learning these routines gives children practical ways to participate in group activities, rather than leaving cooperation to chance.

For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school’s policy uses Assess, Plan, Do, Review. Teachers and the SEND coordinator plan support with parents, recording interventions on a SEN Support Provision Map. Depending on the child’s needs, specialist input can include Occupational Therapy or Speech & Language services. Early years support can be reviewed more frequently, allowing plans to respond as needs change.

Physical care has a concrete provision too: the nursery has toilets suitable for children with physical disabilities. The policy also provides for individual aids and adaptations following specialist advice. Parents of children with SEND are welcomed to discuss their child’s needs with the headteacher and SEND coordinator, making that conversation part of planning support.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Robertswood’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Buckinghamshire Council manages admissions to Robertswood; its School Admissions service is the route for the application and admission criteria.

Preparation for the next stage is a separate matter. The school’s SEND policy describes a transition programme for children moving from its nursery, or another nursery, into Reception. It also provides for meetings between settings involving staff, parents and children where appropriate. Those arrangements concern preparation and support, not entitlement to a place.

Practical Information

The morning nursery session runs from 8:30am to 11:30am; the afternoon runs from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. A lunch club occupies the intervening hour, from 11:30am to 12:30pm. These distinct blocks are useful when matching nursery attendance to a family’s daily timetable.
