Purposeful play gives Foxcub Nursery its character: adults connect what children choose to do with what they need to learn. This is Duke of Norfolk CofE Primary School’s nursery provision in Glossop, serving children aged three to four within the Church of England primary school.
At the Ofsted inspection on 25 and 26 June 2024, early years provision was graded Good within the school’s inspection. That judgement covers the early years phase; it is not a separate nursery rating. The early years findings describe care and teaching that draw on adults’ knowledge of individual children, making play a route into learning.
Play and practical experience shape the early years curriculum. Children learn through play and hands-on activities, with adults helping them develop their understanding. In June 2024, adults combined knowledge of the curriculum with their understanding of each child to give play a learning purpose.
Superheroes, Minibeasts and Dinosaurs are examples of topics used across the early years curriculum. Books also inspire topics. Teachers and teaching assistants plan around children’s existing understanding and interests, giving familiar enthusiasms a place in the learning. For parents, that provides a useful connection between what captures a child’s attention and what adults help them explore next.
In June 2024, children in early years received care that supported their learning, and were ready for their next stage. Knowing the individual child matters here: adults used that understanding alongside their curriculum knowledge when supporting play.
For children with additional needs, the school’s SEND approach starts with provision matched to the needs identified. It covers communication and interaction, physical or sensory needs, learning and cognition, and emotional, social or mental health needs. Families applying for a child with additional needs are asked to make contact in advance, allowing discussion and planning before the child joins. That gives parents a concrete opportunity to explain the support their child needs.
Attending Foxcub Nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Derbyshire County Council decides Reception admissions, while nursery admissions sit with the school’s leadership and governing body. Choosing the nursery therefore remains a separate decision from obtaining a school place.
