Creative play, conversation and early number work give this nursery its character. Part of Whitfield St James' CofE (VC) Primary School in Glossop, it combines nursery teaching with access to The Orchard, the school's onsite club for care before and after the school day. That gives families a way to extend their childcare around nursery hours.
Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good following its inspection on 18 and 19 July 2023. This judgement covers early years within the school.
Speech and communication receive deliberate attention. In July 2023, early years teaching combined opportunities for mathematical and literacy learning with support for children's emotional and social development. For parents, the emphasis is on both starting to learn and learning how to take part.
Play has a clear place alongside those teaching priorities. Children explored and used their creativity, while adults set expectations and helped them establish routines. The early years foundation stage (EYFS) here brings together communication, early learning and personal development: preparation for the next stage includes how children relate to others as well as what they know.
Early reading also made a positive start in July 2023. Together, these findings describe a nursery experience where language and learning habits matter alongside play.
Children in the nursery were receiving good care in July 2023, and support for their emotional and social development was a strength. Established routines gave the learning day a consistent structure, an important consideration for children beginning to spend time in a group.
A nursery teacher appears in the staff structure. For families discussing special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school provides a SENDCo contact at SENDCO@st-james.derbyshire.sch.uk. Its parent support links include Derbyshire Local Offer, Derbyshire Parent and Carer Voice and DIASS, giving families routes to information and independent advice alongside school contact.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Derbyshire County Council's primary admissions process, even when their child already attends this nursery. Treat the nursery choice and the later school application as separate decisions.
For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past; it should not be used as the deadline for a later intake. Apply through the normal local authority route by the deadline for your child's entry year.
The booking offer includes 15-hour and 30-hour nursery provision, with charged additional hours. The school aims to accommodate families' requested hours wherever possible, so flexibility is conditional rather than an assurance of any particular pattern. Contact the school office to register interest or apply.
For the nursery day, morning gates open at 8:45am and registration begins at 8:50am. Afternoon gates open at 3:15pm, ahead of the nursery's 3:20pm finish. The school opening-hours page describes full-time nursery attendance as 32 hours in total.
The Orchard provides wraparound care onsite for nursery children at an additional charge. This is a separate practical consideration from the nursery-hours offer: families using longer days need to account for both. Obtain current charges from the school before committing to additional hours or club care.
