Fabric squares, dancing and marks in sand give Little Pearls a distinctive introduction to writing. This is Swinefleet Primary School’s nursery, with provision starting at age two. The nursery aims to follow children’s interests and curiosity, while the day also has adult-led maths, phonics and familiar routines. Choice has a place alongside structure.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good following the inspection on 12 and 13 July 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school. In July 2023, the early years curriculum developed learning in a clear sequence, with routines helping even the youngest children work independently.
A workbook activity involving name writing or pencil control starts the nursery day. Children then sing about the weekday and discuss the calendar, seasons and weather. Short maths teaching leads into an adult-guided activity, and children choose from four tasks that change each day. These connect with learning already under way, giving children opportunities to practise through different activities.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) connects this play and teaching with children’s development. Development Matters supports assessment of their understanding. Phonics happens daily, with sound work adjusted to readiness and an earlier phase used where appropriate. In July 2023, nursery phonics developed listening and speaking; adults also used questions and children’s responses to extend learning.
Squiggle Whilst You Wiggle brings movement into early writing. Children dance with small fabric squares, then repeat the shapes using pens or crayons at floor level. Paper, foam and sand provide different surfaces for making marks. The nursery uses the programme to help children practise the movements involved in writing.
Outdoor learning follows snack and a story shared with Reception children. Afternoon activities develop a story explored over the week, linking it with the school’s wider theme. The day finishes with a story after either assembly or the Daily Mile. Fridays change the rhythm: colouring, mindfulness music and yoga make space for quieter activity and movement.
Settling can take the time a family needs. Little Pearls offers introductory sessions for as long as parent and child require, and can connect newcomers with parents who have already made that adjustment. A child does not need to be toilet trained to attend. The key person can discuss readiness and help families plan toilet training, so this care routine can be approached together.
Progress is shared through Tapestry, the online learning journal, and a development summary goes home each half term. Twice a year, families meet their child’s key person to discuss achievements and agree next steps. Little Pearls aims to give a spoken update after each session too. Parents can contribute observations and photographs to Tapestry, bringing learning at home into the conversation.
Children staying all day can bring a packed lunch or have a hot meal. Families supply nappies and wipes where needed, and may bring a comfort item. Across the school, staff receive first aid and safeguarding training. For concerns about special educational needs or disabilities, the school holds parent drop-ins on Fridays between 3:15pm and 3:45pm through the office.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. The school directs applicants to contact the Admissions Team directly.
Shared snack and story time with Reception children gives nursery children regular contact with the next stage. That familiarity is a transition benefit, separate from the decision about a school place.

Pack labelled spare clothing, wellies and suitable outdoor layers. In summer, add a sun hat and sun cream; in winter, bring gloves and a scarf. These practical preparations support the outdoor part of the day. For hot meals, refer to the school for current charges.
