Belonging, Respect and Responsibility give Alverstoke’s pre-school its school setting and shared identity. This is the nursery provision at Alverstoke Community Infant and Pre-School on Ashburton Road in Gosport. The school aims to develop children’s curiosity and independence alongside consideration for other people, giving families a clear picture of the values surrounding early learning.
The school grounds include a field, a small woodland and a small pond. These are features of the wider site, rather than a description of a separate nursery garden. They give the school’s emphasis on outdoor learning a concrete setting.
Making, exploring and talking are useful starting points for understanding the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. Children combine activities they initiate themselves with tasks directed by adults. In practical work, they choose materials, plan constructions and learn to handle simple tools safely. This gives play a purpose while leaving room for children’s own ideas.
Creative exploration also forms the foundation of early art learning. Children experiment with materials and reconsider their work as their ideas develop. Cooking and food preparation feature in the early years curriculum too, with attention to hygiene. These are learning activities, rather than a description of the meals served.
Remote-controlled toys and other devices introduce simple technology through play. There is a similar emphasis on exploration in early science learning, where children begin investigating the world around them.
In October 2023, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good. Planned adult conversations helped children develop communication, and learning built progressively. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision; it is not a separate nursery inspection outcome.
Support sits within the school’s wider SEND arrangements. Parents can arrange discussions with the SEND coordinator or Child and Family Support Worker, providing a route for raising concerns about learning or family circumstances. Children on the school’s SEND register have meetings to review their needs and agree targets, so support can be reconsidered as those needs change.
Physical access also matters. The school site is on one level, has a disabled toilet and is wheelchair accessible. For families considering additional support, these are concrete features of the school environment.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Hampshire Admissions Team is the contact for information about applying and appeals. Keep that application separate from the decision to join the pre-school.
The school office handles enquiries at adminoffice@alverstoke-inf.hants.sch.uk or 02392 582403. Its address is Ashburton Road, Alverstoke, Gosport, PO12 2LH. School visits can be arranged through the office, and families with concerns about additional needs can discuss them with the SEND coordinator.
