Norfolk's principal coastal resort and offshore energy hub, Great Yarmouth straddles the River Yare where it meets the North Sea, twenty miles east of Norwich. From herring fleets that once made it one of England's busiest fishing ports to the North Sea oil rigs of the 1960s and a growing offshore wind sector, the town has reinvented its working character more than once. The Victorian seafront runs from Wellington Pier to Britannia Pier, with the cast-iron Winter Garden and the Hippodrome Circus anchoring the promenade; the town counts around 29,000 residents. Greater Anglia trains reach Norwich in roughly thirty minutes.
