Around 71,000 people call the wider built-up area home. Pakefield extends along the clifftop south of Kirkley, and Lowestoft town centre anchors commercial life inland from the seafront.

England's most easterly town, Lowestoft looks out across the North Sea from the Suffolk coast, its character shaped first by the herring fleets that made it one of England's busiest fishing ports and then by the offshore oil and gas industry that took hold in the 1960s. Oulton Broad, the freshwater lake to the west, is among Lowestoft's most sought-after neighbourhoods for school catchments, while Kirkley to the south draws families competing for primary places. Greater Anglia rail services on the Wherry Lines reach Norwich in around an hour.
