At a Glance

Play indoors and outdoors gives Caister’s nursery its character: children learn through direct experience, with opportunities to try things out and work together. Otter caters for children aged two to three, while Seals serves three- and four-year-olds. There are 16 places for two-year-olds in Foundation Stage 1 (FS1) and 52 for children aged three and four.

The nursery operates within Caister Infant With Nursery School’s registration. Ofsted’s May 2026 inspection judged early years to meet the Expected standard. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) shapes the learning. In parent terms, planned activities follow children’s developmental steps, helping them practise communication, thinking, physical skills and getting along with others. Play supplies the first-hand experiences through which those skills develop. Indoor and outdoor learning environments give children opportunities to investigate and collaborate; the nursery aims to encourage curiosity and willingness to attempt a challenge.

Across early years in May 2026, children explored materials, made constructions and created things, alongside practical counting activities. Adults helped with number work, so mathematical understanding developed through objects and activity. Stories and conversations also gave children practice in listening and expressing their ideas. From nursery onwards, children developed a secure base in language, communication and the beginnings of reading.

Speaking and listening. Adults often demonstrated language well and prompted fuller answers, but this practice varied between classes. The approach to developing spoken language needed more consistent use. For families, the useful distinction is between the opportunities children have to talk and how consistently adults extend that talk.

Care and Support

A nursery lead and key persons form the nursery team. The school also has an assistant headteacher responsible for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), giving families a defined role for discussing additional learning needs.

Home visits, conversations with families and assessments help staff understand children before and as they settle. In May 2026, early years children became comfortable with routines quickly, built trusting relationships with adults and knew whom to approach for help. Children needing additional support received caring assistance that enabled them to join learning with their peers. Settling therefore involves understanding the individual child as well as introducing the group’s routines.

Lunch carries an additional charge for both age groups. Include that extra when considering the session pattern that suits your family.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal Norfolk County Council admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat the nursery decision and the Reception application as two separate steps.

The council’s Admissions Team can be contacted on 0344 800 8020 or at admissions@norfolk.gov.uk. Use that route for school admissions enquiries, rather than assuming a nursery booking also reserves the next school place.

Practical Information

Morning and afternoon sessions are offered for Otter and Seals. For funding, current charges and additional sessions, contact the nursery office at dhoy@caisterinfant.org.uk.

Two waiting lists distinguish children seeking funded nursery places from two-year-olds. Most children taking funded places begin in September; January and April entry depends on remaining spaces. Two-year-olds can start at other points in the year when a place becomes available. These different entry patterns matter when planning a start around your child’s age and family arrangements.
