Sharing, taking turns and learning to concentrate give Filby’s nursery story its clearest character. This is provision within Filby Primary School, rather than a separate nursery business: it joined the school in 2021, having previously operated privately. The school’s overall age range is 2 to 11.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following the inspection on 29 and 30 March 2023. That judgement covers early years across the school. At that point, leaders were still bringing the acquired nursery into the wider early years curriculum, an important qualification when considering how the provision fitted together.
The learning described in March 2023 combines social habits with early reading and number work. Children practise waiting for a turn and sharing with others, while developing the attention needed to stay with an activity. These are practical foundations for group learning: listening matters alongside the first steps towards literacy and mathematics.
Across early years, adults understood individual children and adjusted activities to their learning needs. Reading and number received particular attention. For a parent, the useful distinction is that children were supported according to their needs, rather than simply being given an identical task.
Children could maintain their concentration over extended periods, and staff helped them develop behaviours that supported learning. Preparation for the next stage therefore included how children participated, as well as what they knew.
Knowing each child was a feature of early years practice in March 2023. Adults used that understanding to change learning activities, connecting individual support with the everyday curriculum. This matters for children who need a different starting point or a task adjusted to help them participate.
Safeguarding was judged effective across the school at the same inspection. Staff training was current, concerns were recognised and reported, and leaders acted promptly when concerns arose. Checks also covered adults working or volunteering at the school, with oversight from governors and trust leaders. These are school-wide arrangements relevant to the nursery’s place within the school, rather than a separate nursery inspection outcome.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Choosing this nursery should therefore be a decision about the nursery experience itself, with the later school application treated as a separate step.
In March 2023, children across early years were prepared for their next stage through support for reading, number and learning behaviours. That educational preparation is distinct from securing admission: being ready to move on does not itself allocate a place.
