A three-hour session or a full day, starting from a child's second birthday: Hemsby's nursery gives families a choice of attendance patterns within a school setting. Children can attend from age two until they begin full-time school, and there are 20 places in each session. The nursery operates in term time, so holiday childcare needs a separate plan.
Based at School Loke in Hemsby, the provision belongs to Hemsby Primary School, part of City2Coast Primary Federation. Its own team includes a nursery manager, an assistant manager and a key person.
Morning sessions run from 8:50am to 11:50am; afternoon sessions begin at 12:20pm and finish at 3:20pm. Between them sits an optional lunch period, from 11:50am to 12:20pm. Families can choose either session or a full day, making lunch the practical link between the two halves.
Development Matters guides the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the framework for children's early learning and development. Exploring the world is part of that learning: early-years children investigate their surroundings and find out about places and people. This gives everyday observation a place alongside language and number.
Learning together starts with listening and waiting for a turn. In April 2025, Ofsted found that routines established in nursery helped children do both. Alongside these social skills, children developed their understanding of the world, used numbers successfully and learnt to recognise sounds. This brings early learning and group participation together.
Books have a physical home in the school library, which all children can use. Children may borrow a library book to enjoy reading or hearing, with adult help choosing when needed. That makes shared enjoyment of stories part of the offer, alongside learning about sounds.
The nursery manager belongs to the designated safeguarding lead team, and the nursery staffing structure includes a key-person role. These give families identifiable roles for discussing their child's care. An assistant headteacher also holds the school's special educational needs coordinator role.
Lunch can be added before or after a session, or between sessions. Catering is managed in house, with food prepared fresh each day and ingredients including locally supplied vegetables, fruit and meat. Packed lunches are another option: containers should carry the child's name, and families are asked to avoid chocolate bars and sweets.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Norfolk County Council's admissions process and meet the normal deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as separate decisions.
Sessions can use 15 or 30 funded hours, subject to eligibility. Funding for two-year-olds has qualifying conditions. Lunch food carries an extra charge, and the half-hour lunch session is also charged unless funded. Contact the school for current charges.
For nursery enquiries, call 01493 730364 to speak with the nursery manager through the office. Visits can also be arranged by telephone. Reducing hours or leaving requires four weeks' written notice. A place may be withdrawn if it goes unused for 28 days without advance notification and another child needs it, so keep the nursery informed about absences.
