Stories learned by heart give Moorlands’ nursery its clearest character: language, repetition and conversation are part of the everyday learning. This is the school’s provision for three- and four-year-olds in Belton, Great Yarmouth, within a Church of England primary academy. The emphasis is on building children’s vocabulary alongside practical early skills.
Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 21 and 22 January 2025. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery. Moorlands belongs to DNEAT, whose chosen values are wisdom, kindness, courage and community.
Songs and rhymes sit alongside storytelling and talk. In January 2025, nursery learning included frequent opportunities to discuss stories, helping children understand their meaning and extend the words they could use. Learning a story from memory gives a child familiar language to return to; discussion adds opportunities to explore what that language means. There is a clear purpose behind the repetition.
Counting and writing also feature in the activities. These were chosen effectively to give children practice in important skills, so the day combines language development with early number work and opportunities to write. For parents, the useful distinction is between simply keeping children occupied and giving an activity a learning purpose: here, the early-years findings connect the activities directly with the skills children practise.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) judgement therefore provides a positive assessment of this stage of education. The most concrete picture of the nursery day is its combination of spoken language, remembered stories and practical skill development.
DNEAT describes its approach as welcoming families of any faith or none. Its Christian values give families a context for the nursery’s place within a Church of England academy, while the trust’s stated inclusion aim extends beyond religious affiliation.
Support for staff includes professional development across DNEAT. Its Career Entitlement encompasses training and opportunities for colleagues to share practice, with subject leadership networks and an Assessment Hub among the examples. These are trust-level arrangements: they give context to the professional support available across its academies, rather than an individual assessment of the nursery team.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Moorlands. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing a nursery and applying for school as two separate decisions.
That distinction matters even when both stages belong to the same academy. Familiarity with the school does not itself secure admission, so a nursery place should be chosen for the early-years experience it provides.
