In November 2023, reading began in Nursery at St. George’s, giving books an early place in children’s education. This is the nursery provision of St. George’s Primary & Nursery School in Great Yarmouth, where the school’s age range starts at three. A nursery school manager leads the provision within the wider school team.
In November 2023, children in the early years were thriving, with learning taking place outdoors as well as in the classroom. The emphasis was on engaging children and helping them feel confident with adults.
Books were a starting point in November 2023. Children began learning to read when they joined Nursery, so their first experience of school included the foundations of reading rather than leaving that work until later. The reading curriculum then had a clear structure, with trained adults taking a consistent approach. That gave early reading a place within a connected school programme.
In November 2023, indoor and outdoor learning both formed part of the early years experience. The classroom was one learning space; opportunities outside extended the day beyond it. Children were comfortable discussing their learning with adults, making conversation part of how they participated.
Engagement matters to behaviour, too. In November 2023, children behaved well because activities held their interest and were enjoyable. The practical implication is a day in which learning and behaviour support each other, rather than being separate concerns.
Predictable routines help children settle. In November 2023, children in Nursery and Reception adjusted quickly, supported by consistent routines and clear expectations from staff. For a child beginning school, that gives the day a dependable pattern. Early years children also felt safe and had the confidence to speak to adults about their learning.
Support sits within a wider school structure that includes a special educational needs coordinator, a parent support advisor and an early help social worker. These are school roles, alongside the nursery school manager, rather than a description of the nursery’s daily staffing numbers.
The school describes its welcome as inclusive, with the qualification that it must have the expertise to educate the child. It makes reasonable adjustments using Norfolk County Council’s Provision Expected at SEN Support (PEaSS) guidance. Its aim is to remove barriers to participation, recognising that some children need help that differs from that given to others their age.
A separate application. Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat the choice of nursery and the application for a school place as two separate decisions when planning your child’s next step.
