Concept Cat gives early learning at Fairfield a concrete focus: new words help children understand ideas such as comparing quantities. The nursery sits within Fairfield Academy, a primary school on Mendip Avenue in Scartho, Grimsby. Nursery childcare includes provision for three and four year olds.
This is a school nursery, with access to the academy’s arrangements for additional learning needs and communication with families. For parents whose child needs extra help, that means the class teacher and special educational needs coordinator (SENCo) have distinct responsibilities: the teacher organises classroom support, while the SENCo oversees provision across the school.
Language and learning through play feature in the early years. In October 2022, teachers used Concept Cat to introduce vocabulary and ideas, including comparisons between quantities. Resources supported children learning alongside one another, and adults checked their understanding and knew what they needed to learn next. Those checks helped children remember ideas and develop confidence.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach includes assessing children’s development to shape later activities and identify additional support needs. In practical terms, planning takes account of children’s different starting points, rather than assuming they have the same abilities.
Early reading. Teaching reading began in the early years in October 2022, but some pupils across the school progressed to unfamiliar sounds before consolidating earlier ones, and reading books did not match their sound knowledge. Families should keep that dated concern in mind when discussing early reading progress.
Settling begins with familiarity. Children joining the nursery visit as part of their transition programme. Families are encouraged to meet staff and look around before their child starts; staff also seek contact with a child’s previous setting. This gives adults a way to learn about the child before the move.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), Termly Support Plans record individual provision and targets. Reviews take place in October, February and June. Possible adjustments include visual timetables, additional classroom resources and teaching assistant support, giving families concrete points to discuss as needs change.
Termly parent consultations provide time with the class teacher, with an additional SENCo meeting for children on the SEN register if required. The school building has wheelchair access, accessible toilets and shower facilities. Children with medical needs have individual healthcare plans developed with parents and healthcare professionals, so care instructions can be shared with the adults supporting them.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and confers no admissions priority. A separate application is required. For September 2027 entry, North East Lincolnshire residents apply to the council using its Common Application Form by 15 January 2027; families elsewhere apply through their home local authority.
Class transition and admission are separate matters. At changes of class, children spend time with their next teacher before the summer break, and teachers discuss pastoral and learning needs. Specific transition plans can be arranged for children with SEN where needed.
Eligible families can book a 30-hour nursery place for a three or four year old, subject to availability. Parents obtain an eligibility code online, bring it to school, and the school checks it with the local authority before booking. Eligibility and space both matter.
For nursery enquiries, contact the academy on 01472 879301 or email admin@fairfield-academy.co.uk. Ask the school for current charges.
