At a Glance

Play, practical number work and the first steps towards reading shape nursery life at Springfield Primary Academy. This is the school's own 48-place nursery in Grimsby, with children joining from the term following their third birthday and staying until the academic year in which they turn four ends.

The nursery sits within the academy's early years provision. Its emphasis is on learning through play, with communication, physical development and social skills developed alongside early literacy and maths. For parents, the defining feature is the combination of play and planned teaching within a school setting.

The Nursery Day

Two three-hour sessions give the day its shape: mornings run from 9am to noon, and afternoons from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines teaching led by adults with organised opportunities for children to practise skills through play. In everyday terms, learning includes talking, moving, exploring numbers and sharing books.

Little Wandle Letters and Sounds begins here with Foundations for Phonics. Children practise listening to sounds and working with spoken words, and start connecting letters with sounds through games. They also learn how books work, discuss characters and explore the shape of a story. That gives reading a purpose before children can read independently.

Maths uses practical work on counting, shapes, measures and number patterns, with problems that encourage children to explain their thinking. Physical development is taught by class teachers alongside LC Fitness, bringing another named partner into early years learning.

At the October 2023 inspection, most children in early years were learning successfully. That finding supports the nursery's emphasis on building skills through both teaching and activity.

Care and Support

A child's start may be spread across two or more weeks, and a home visit may take place beforehand. These arrangements allow an introduction to nursery to happen in stages. The October 2023 early years findings offer reassurance for families concerned about settling: children became familiar with school routines quickly.

Food includes a daily fruit snack for Foundation Stage children. Nursery children can also receive free milk through Cool Milk registration: each registered child receives a 189ml serving of semi-skimmed milk. Registering is the practical step families need to take to access that daily provision.

For additional needs, parents can contact the special educational needs coordinator through the school office. Support follows Assess, Plan, Do, Review: staff and parents agree the intended outcomes and support, then revisit its impact at least termly. This gives families a recurring opportunity to contribute to decisions about their child's needs.

Moving On to Reception

A nursery place does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority during the normal admissions round; attending nursery does not trigger an automatic transfer.

For the 2025–2026 admissions cycle, conditional priority applied to nursery children eligible for Early Years Pupil Premium. This was the third oversubscription criterion, following looked-after or previously looked-after children and siblings. It was not priority for every nursery child, and families should not treat that past cycle's rule as a guarantee of admission.

Transition support is a separate matter. Nursery staff coordinate with Reception colleagues and pass reports and agreed records to another school where appropriate. The preparation supports children moving either within Springfield or to a different school.

Practical Information

Nursery enquiries go through the school office on 01472 230260 or office@springfieldacademy.net. Joining the nursery waiting list involves completing a short form at the office.

Accepting a place carries an expectation of attendance for the remainder of the academic year. Families withdrawing a child during the year are asked to give at least eight weeks' notice, an arrangement to factor into changes of childcare.

Clothing should help children manage toilet trips: comfortable jogging bottoms and safe shoes are practical choices. A school sweatshirt with a white polo shirt is recommended. Early years collection takes place at the classroom door, and teachers can usually speak with parents after school or by appointment.
