Stories learned by memory, then reinvented with familiar words: language gave Weelsby’s early years provision its distinctive character at the June 2022 inspection. The nursery serves three- and four-year-olds at Weelsby Academy in Grimsby’s East Marsh area, placing those first experiences of learning within a primary school.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 21 and 22 June 2022. That judgement covers early years within the academy; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Language learning was purposeful in June 2022. Children memorised stories before creating versions of their own, drawing on vocabulary and expressions they had retained. This gave them something concrete to use when developing their own ideas, rather than simply listening to an adult tell a story.
Teaching moved through small, manageable stages. Adults explained tasks precisely and made clear what they expected, helping children understand what to do next. The early years curriculum also prepared children for phonics, connecting this work on spoken language with the foundations needed for learning to read.
Independent activity mattered too. In June 2022, children applied earlier teaching while working for themselves, and sustained their concentration because the learning environment fitted both their existing knowledge and their next steps. For parents, the useful distinction is that adult teaching and independent learning supported each other. Children had opportunities to put learning into practice. The curriculum covered learning beyond language as well, giving children foundations across its different areas.
Learning to share attention was part of early years teaching in June 2022: children practised kindness and taking turns. These are practical skills for participating in activities alongside other children, as well as learning with adults. The EYFS lead also holds a deputy safeguarding lead role, connecting early years leadership with the school’s safeguarding team.
Support for special educational needs and disabilities follows an Assess–Plan–Do–Review cycle across the academy. Teachers and the SENCO consider a child’s needs with parents, agree the intended outcomes and support, then revisit its impact. The class teacher retains responsibility for daily teaching; a teaching assistant can provide additional support where needed. This gives families a continuing role in decisions rather than a single conversation at the point of identification.
Specialist advice can involve the Speech and Language Service, Educational Psychology and the Child Development Centre. The academy also takes account of information from the Early Years Inclusion Support Service before a child joins. That creates a route for existing knowledge about a child’s needs to inform their start.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the local authority where they live, with the normal primary application deadline of 15 January.
Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions. A nursery place should not be taken as confirmation of a later school place; submit the Reception application even when your child already attends Weelsby’s nursery.
The academy is on Weelsby Street, Grimsby, DN32 7PF. For nursery enquiries, contact the school on 01472 806778 or email info@weelsby.org.uk.
