At a Glance

Three-hour sessions give Welholme Academy’s nursery a school-week rhythm, with learning spread across five days rather than concentrated into a few longer visits. The nursery belongs to the academy on Welholme Road in Grimsby and takes children from the term following their second or third birthday. Children can stay until the academic year in which they turn four ends.

This is an early start within a primary school. For families choosing it, the practical distinction is between a morning or afternoon place and additional attendance, which depends on staffing and space. A preferred session group cannot be promised, so the allocated pattern matters when planning work and other childcare.

The Nursery Day

Indoor learning and outdoor physical activity both feature in the early years. In June 2023, children enjoyed the activities teachers planned, and adults helped them participate inside and outside. Beams and ropes provided a concrete outdoor challenge: children practised balancing, making movement part of their learning.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) covers children’s development as well as early academic learning. In parent language, that means learning to communicate, manage feelings and move confidently alongside beginning literacy and maths. Understanding the world and creative expression also belong to this framework. These areas give a broader purpose to nursery activities than preparation for formal lessons alone.

Early reading has a place too. In June 2023, staff taught phonics skilfully from the beginning of early years provision. This introduces the connection between sounds and written language. Together with the outdoor balancing example, it shows a day that includes both early reading skills and physical learning.

Care and Support

Relationships matter when children are starting young. In June 2023, adults established trust quickly with children joining early years. The settling arrangements allow for an intake spread over two or more weeks, and a home visit may take place before a child starts. Families therefore need to plan for a potentially gradual beginning.

A room leader and/or EYFS leader can discuss nursery arrangements with parents. For concerns about additional needs, families can speak to the school’s special educational needs coordinator (SENCO). This provides a clear contact for discussing a child’s needs rather than leaving parents to work out whom to approach.

Children staying across lunchtime need a packed lunch. Supervision at lunch can attract a charge under the nursery arrangements, so families considering longer attendance should ask the school for current charges as well as planning the food they will send.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through their home local authority and meet the normal application deadline. Treat that application as a separate task, even if the child is already settled at Welholme.

The April 2024 nursery arrangements include a conditional statement that a place could be secured for a nursery child receiving Early Years or Pupil Premium funding. That is not a promise to every nursery family. The 2021–2022 school arrangements also require a separate Reception application; their oversubscription criteria do not include nursery attendance.

Transition support is separate from allocation. Nursery staff work with Reception colleagues to plan the move, including where a child will attend another school. Reports and agreed records can be passed to the receiving school, helping the next team understand the child.

Practical Information

Morning nursery registration is at 8:50am, with collection at 11:50am. Afternoon sessions run from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Each pattern totals 15 hours a week. Confirm the morning timings before arranging childcare, as the allocated session will shape the family’s daily routine.

The April 2024 arrangements describe funding over 38 term-time weeks: 15 hours for eligible two-year-olds, universal 15-hour provision from the term after turning three, and 30 hours for eligible families with three- or four-year-olds. Extra sessions require sufficient staffing and spare places. Additional fees are non-refundable, including when a booked session is missed through illness.

For enquiries, contact the school office on 01472 329944 or email office@welholmeacademy.com. Discuss the session allocation with the nursery leadership team before committing to a childcare pattern.
