Nursery at Barfield Prep School

Hatchlings, Owlets and Owls give Barfield’s nursery its own identity, with play, outdoor exploration and learning about feelings shaping the early years. The nursery caters for ages 2-4 and forms part of Barfield Prep School in Farnham, Surrey. It is a school nursery with a choice of term-time or year-round attendance, giving families two ways to fit care around their calendar.
In May 2026, there were five Nursery classes. That is a class count, rather than a measure of available places. The nursery team includes room leads, key persons and assistants, with a manager and deputy manager overseeing provision.
Play and adult-led learning work together here. In May 2026, early-years teaching combined planned activities with opportunities for children to explore independently, while adults used assessment to identify children needing extra help. This gives children room to make choices alongside teaching directed towards their next steps.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) takes practical form through early reading, writing, movement and social learning. Children learn phonics and practise forming letters; classrooms and outdoor learning spaces allow them to select activities independently. Physical experiences inside and outside develop balance, coordination and the small movements needed for handling objects and writing.
Learning also reaches into the world around them. Early-years children explore the work of healthcare services, firefighters and the police, making familiar community roles part of their understanding. Adults encourage communication, sharing and cooperation, so learning to play alongside others is part of the educational day.
Ballet adds a named option for children from Owlets upwards. Wednesday classes follow the Royal Academy of Dance Syllabi at an age-appropriate level, with a Summer Term showcase for parents. It gives interested children a structured outlet for movement and creativity.
Zones of Regulation gives nursery children a way to think about emotions. Stories including The Colour Monster and Find your happy support that work, helping children put feelings into words. The nursery team is available to children and their families, providing a point of contact when support is needed.
Staffing includes key persons and room leads. The Hatchlings room lead has an Early Years Teacher qualification, while the deputy nursery manager holds a Level 3 qualification. In May 2026, early-years adults responded promptly when children needed additional help, and predictable routines helped children manage emotions and develop social skills.
Thomas Franks provides the school’s catering. Menus accommodate dietary needs, and staff receive allergy-awareness training. Early-years children were carefully supervised while eating in May 2026, an important detail for families considering mealtime care.
Safeguarding follow-up. In May 2026, safeguarding arrangements included early-years children, but school-wide policy wording needed changes to match daily practice; these were completed during the inspection. A few staff also needed greater confidence about the precise routes for reporting low-level concerns and whistleblowing. Recommended work covered both policy review and consistent use of reporting channels.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Confirm with admissions what existing nursery families must do for Reception entry. The school has a separate Reception to Year 6 registration route. Registration itself does not secure a place: offers involve assessment and the headteacher’s discretion, with registration order and siblings taken into account. Familiarity with the nursery should therefore remain separate from expectations about admission.
Attendance choices include session packages, five full days or five extended days, with term-time and year-round options. Minimum attendance. Hatchlings requires three sessions each week, Owlets four and Owls five. Those commitments matter when choosing a pattern around work or other childcare; many activities happen during morning sessions.
Holiday opening excludes Bank Holidays and INSET unless otherwise advertised. Families can make an enquiry online or telephone 01252 782271, selecting option 4 for admissions. Personal tours can be booked. Contact the school for current charges.
