Where the River Wey cuts through the hills of west Surrey, Guildford has served as a settlement since Alfred the Great named it in his will around 880, growing through the wool trade and a Norman castle into a market town of around 77,000 residents today. The Town Centre is widely regarded as one of Surrey's most school-competitive postcodes for state places, drawing families from across the borough, while Burpham to the northeast has long been a sought-after pocket for primary catchments. Guildford station reaches London Waterloo in around 35 minutes on the South Western Main Line. Bramley and Woodbridge lie to the south. The Anglican cathedral on Stag Hill, whose foundation stone was laid in 1936, gives the city its most distinctive skyline landmark.
