At a Glance

Sensory learning and small steps towards independence shape the early learning options at Pond Meadow. Its nursery provision belongs to a special school in Guildford, with Springboard named as its EYFS class. The school's stated emphasis is on teaching in ways that match how pupils learn, making the child's developmental needs the starting point.

Across the school, class teams combine a teacher, a lead teaching assistant and 3-4 teaching assistants. That describes a team model rather than a nursery staffing ratio. For families, the useful distinction is between the adults supporting a class and the individual support their child needs.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) supplies developmental outcomes used within the school's learning pathways. Here, progress can mean engagement, interaction or an individual developmental milestone, rather than an academic measure alone. Observation helps capture those steps.

The Sensory Curriculum includes communication, independence, thinking, physical and sensory development, and social and emotional learning. Topics change after half a term and are adapted to developmental stage. Learning extends into breaks, lunch and personal care: everyday routines become opportunities to practise skills as well as times for support.

Stepping Stones is another school pathway, intended for learners working beyond the sensory pathway but below P4. Practical activities introduce early English and mathematics, while exploration and persistence are among the engagement skills it develops. Its Total Communication approach combines signing, objects of reference, visuals, spoken language and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). This gives children different ways to participate and express themselves, according to their communication needs.

Care and Support

Recognising a bodily need is itself a learning task. The school's Interoception Curriculum teaches awareness of sensations such as thirst, hunger and needing the toilet. Familiar routines, sensory experiences and visual support are used to practise noticing those signals; movement, rest or adult help are among the responses taught. The school aims to help pupils understand and communicate their needs.

Parents and carers work with class teachers and other professionals on Individual Education Plan targets. Class teams monitor progress, which is also reported at the annual education, health and care plan (EHCP) review. A school family support team includes EHCP coordination and administration alongside a home/school link worker, giving families distinct roles for planning and liaison.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must treat Reception admission as a separate process, rather than assume that attendance secures the next place.

For Pond Meadow, Surrey County Council manages school placements through its EHCP admissions route. The local education office is the first contact; the council makes the offer. Suitability for the child's needs and space in the relevant class are part of the school's response to a referral.

Practical Information

Visits need advance agreement. Pond Meadow is operating at full capacity and tours require prior agreement. A formal referral can lead to a visit, sometimes including time in class.

School enquiries can go to admissions@pond-meadow.surrey.sch.uk or 01483 532239. Eligible pupils can receive Surrey County Council transport. Allocated spaces in the front car park allow school staff to collect pupils from transport and accompany them into school, providing a practical handover arrangement.
