Independence is the clearest thread running through Stoughton Infant School’s nursery provision: children learn to try things for themselves, with adults providing guidance and opportunities to practise. The nursery takes children from age three and forms part of the infant school in Guildford. Its focus is on the foundations of learning, including communication, movement and relationships with other children.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 14 and 15 November 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. The nursery-specific findings describe support that helps children build knowledge while developing the confidence to act independently.
Conversation has a substantial role in learning. Adults engage children in purposeful talk, alongside activities that encourage curiosity and independent effort. For a young child, this connects learning with both speaking to an adult and trying something themselves. Adult guidance and opportunities to practise work together, rather than leaving independence to chance.
Language, early reading, physical movement and social development are all part of the nursery’s educational focus. These are practical foundations: communicating with others, developing reading skills, gaining control of movement and learning how to relate to other children. The emphasis reaches beyond a single area of development.
In November 2023, staff working across early years used their knowledge of children’s development to adjust teaching promptly. Children could make progress because adults followed their development and changed the teaching in response. This gives independent activity a clear purpose: children have room to exercise curiosity, while staff provide guidance and practice suited to their learning.
Support in early years combines adult interaction with attention to each child’s development. Clear guidance helps children attempt activities successfully, while opportunities to practise help them build independence. For parents, the useful distinction is that working independently sits alongside adult support; it does not mean children are simply left to manage alone.
Checking understanding. The November 2023 inspection also identified a school-wide weakness: teachers sometimes took too long to address misunderstandings, leaving some tasks and support poorly matched to pupils’ understanding. This was a broader school concern, rather than a finding specifically assigned to the nursery. It matters alongside the positive early years findings because timely adjustment is central to helping children learn.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place at Stoughton Infant School. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Choosing the nursery and securing a school place are separate decisions, so families should plan for that second application even if their child is already attending.
