Language, books and specialist support for deaf children give Tany's Dell nursery its character. Part of Tany's Dell Primary School and Nursery on Mowbray Road in Harlow, it offers morning and afternoon sessions alongside 15 hour and 30 hour funded places. For families, the practical distinction is between the funded allocation and the session their child attends.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 8 and 9 February 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Books begin in nursery. Children encounter engaging texts, while early years parents are invited to read alongside their child in class. This gives families a direct part in early reading, rather than leaving the experience entirely to staff. Across the school, children can borrow library books to share at home.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines foundations for learning with children's development. In February 2022, language and communication were developed skilfully, and early years children were building their understanding of number and learning to read. The emphasis was on confidence as well as knowledge.
Outdoor learning forms part of that picture. In February 2022, adults supported children's confidence in the outside learning areas, while the early years classrooms had plentiful resources. Children were calm and settled. Additional writing support included help with pencil grip and letter formation, giving children a practical response to an identified difficulty.
Settling was a strength in February 2022: children adjusted quickly to early years and made swift progress. Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) also progressed very well, making inclusion a material part of the early years assessment.
The Resource Base for deaf children supports pupils from nursery onwards. Two Qualified Teachers of the Deaf work alongside specialist staff, with support in mainstream classrooms and smaller groups in Base Camp. Communication is adapted to the child through spoken language, British Sign Language or Sign Supported English. Daily equipment checks and access to radio aids connect that support to everyday participation.
Parents have a regular communication route through the Home/School Book, with space to send messages back to the class teacher. Tany's Dell is a nut free school, a practical rule for families preparing food.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer priority. Families must make a separate Reception application through Essex's normal admissions process. Oversubscription priorities include children in care, staff children, siblings, the priority admission area and distance; nursery attendance is not a criterion.
Transition is a separate matter. New entrants are invited to an induction session in the term before admission, giving children and parents time with the teacher and in the classroom. Familiarity helps preparation; it does not alter allocation.
Morning sessions run from 8:30 to 11:30; afternoons run from 12:30 to 15:30. Nursery applications use the Nursery Application Form. Enquiries can go to the school office on 01279 866230 or parents@tanysdell.essex.sch.uk.
Uniform applies from nursery onwards, and clothing must carry the child's name. Logo items are supplied by Top Form at The Stow in Harlow, while donated uniform in good condition is made available to families who need it. That provides another route to getting equipped.
